Differences
Community-oriented policing focuses on involving and forming a partnership with the community to address crime in the community (Whisenand and McCain, 2015). On the other hand, problem-oriented policing is a strategy applied in crime prevention where a specific set of procedures and standards have to be applied when addressing crime issues. In the community-oriented policing, the ideal goal is to serve the community while problem-oriented policing relies on the foundation of involving the community to address the crime. Community-oriented policing helps to identify the common issues that the community faces every day. Consequently, to address these issues problem-oriented policing helps develop customized solutions to these issues. Community-oriented policing focuses on communication and interpersonal skills whereas in problem-oriented policing the main focus is in applying analytical skills and conflict-resolving skills in addressing disputes before they become crime problems (Whisenand and McCain, 2015). In problem oriented policing the main focus of the police is to address the most prevalent crime as a priority whereas in community-oriented policing the main emphasis the working relationship between the community and the police (Whisenand and McCain, 2015).
Similarities
Both community-oriented policing and problem-oriented policing have some degree of public participation. It is through involving the public that the police are able to establish the issues the community faces and thus area able to develop strategies to address these issues. In both community-oriented policing and problem-oriented policing there has to be a form of structure that guides the police in terms of administration. Furthermore, there is normally a guiding mission statement that has to be involved that will guide the police officers in achieving their objectives in crime control and prevention.
