Primary literary techniques of diction, imagery and figurative language are employed by only good poets in their work or poems. Nevertheless, mainly great poets are capable of employing these literal tools to convey an experience or understanding to the reader. William Blake, Emily Dickson and Robert Frost are all great poets of their time. Thus, it is important to note that they all embrace literal devices in their own way. In Emily Dickson’s “I felt a funeral, in my Brain”, the speaker explains in details how she lost her mind. Also, she utilizes various events in making sure that she secures her feelings and still present the things that greatly torture her.
Dickson’s poetry sturdily impacts the readers’ minds since she bravely employs figurative language, for example, similes, paradox, personification and irony. Dickinson designates "feeling a funeral in her brain". There is a possibility that this metaphor reflects her death and connection to “Sense breaking through” illustrates to the readers that a person only appreciated the value of life after death. We can look at this poem as a reflection the writer is having to state a point that goes back to her time and literary technics plays a very big role in making this possible.
In “The Lamb” by William Blake, how delicate the animal is comes out clearly from the gentle manner in which the poet builds his verse. Actually, he uses the same tone and language that is largely reserved to speaking to the very young when talking to the animal “dost thou know who made thee?” He however describes the lamb’s attributes using figurative language that it appears so powerful despite being so small. Additionally, Blake expresses how great God’s creation is in his own eyes, view and world. Blake fundamentally provides a theoretical explanation in which construction itself is interpreted in relations of the blamelessness and precision of the lamb. It is therefore clear that Blake’s occupation and background largely influence the content and style of this poem. Considering the time he lived of romantics when the church’s meaning was deteriorating, we can see why he is emphasizing that there is a possibility for individuals to discover God on their own without the church. This poem expresses this point of view as he exemplifies how God created humanity and also this animal.
Lastly in “Fire and Ice” by Robert Frost, he tries to elucidate how the world will end by either ice or fire. The two primal elements serve as a metaphor expressing the general human emotions that can be very distractive. By employing first person singular, the poet portrays that he conquers with those who believe that the world will end by fire though his own experience. Moreover, Frost successfully passes across the main emphasis of the poem that is the way hate and desires are equally powerful in destroying the world. Additionally, Frost employs a carefree attitude, simple language and rhyme schemes to bring about his point and signify each emotion’s importance.
In conclusion, it is clear that the poetry of William Blake, Robert Frost and Emily Dickson contains comparable ideas and themes. All poets try to speak of loneliness, death and to romanticize nature. In many ways all these poets are majoring on the powerful force of nature, God and the unknown. Despite the fact that they all lived in different times, they all communicate that the literary technique is the backbone of poetry. I therefore conclude that poetry just like any other genre of literature depends on the society to get its resources hence talk about what affects the society. This is a major reason to way there is a comparison of themes and style in the work of the poets featured.
