Insecurity is the evident point in this case study. The best way to address this issue is by using a comprehensive approach. The therapist should consider the multidimensional elements in the problem and should give emphasize to the wellness or quality of life by considering the spiritual, psychological and the emotional aspects of the patient.
As noted in the case study, it is obvious that the state of being unemployed is a great stressor in the society. However, it is evident that the level of depression due to unemployment and other social problems varies from one person to another. Psychologists throughout the world agree with fact that depression associated with unemployment and social conditions among emigrants is higher than native residents. For many people state of being unemployed is like a sense of failure or like a loss of hope for the future.
Personal issues such as Lack of family and supportive friends, financial problems due to job loss, husband deployed overseas and raising a baby by herself demonstrates that a comprehensive approach is the best theory that is applicable in this condition. Even though there is not a commonly agreed definition for this theory. However, in general, it is explained as the application of collaborative procedures and generally understood principles that help to develop an enduring and favorable outcomes within a specific condition.
In this particular case, we should consider the multidimensional elements in the problem and should give emphasize to the wellness or quality of life by considering the spiritual, psychological and the emotional aspects of the patient. Comprehensive approach is the only way to address all these issues. So, this is the best theory that is applicable in this context.
One of the main goals in this kind of approach is to enable the client to improve the empowerment sense. Psychological empowerment means developing the trust of client to focus more on gaining control and power over the resources and decisions that decide the quality of the client’s life. Another advantage of using comprehensive approach is to fostering critical consciousness. Working surroundings always ask for change to reduce social imbalance. And the second goal of this approach will address the client’s capacity to react upon the social changes that are going around his work sector. Critical consciousness also includes cultural, political, historical and economic aspects of human experience. In other words, comprehensive approach is an all-inclusive psychological practice for best results.
The role of client
The role of client in this case is really complex. However, it is the duty of the therapist to collect as many details from the client. The response of the client in accord to the questions will decide the results of the therapy. Another major role of this client is to follow the instructions proposed by the therapist. The client should respond or contact the therapist constantly during the therapy course.
Competency is the first major issue in this case. Competency here can be defined as the functional capacity of both the therapist and the client. The therapist should begin this program after admitting the fact that it is not that easy to classify subjects. Inadequate disclosures from the client can create some issue.
Comprehensive approach is a well-designed program that can address both short and long term therapy course. The advantage here is that the therapist can address all the general issues with a single approach. It does not matter the duration of the therapy; the approach will bring fast results.
In this particular case, the therapist should pay good attention to the culture and tradition of the client. The client here is not a Native American. She speaks Spanish and was an immigrant from Guatemala. General complaint about therapists in United States is that they have problems in understanding the cultural and social problems of immigrants. So, acquiring a general idea about social-cultural background of the client will help the therapist to get desired results.
The therapist also will need to collect additional details about the present living surroundings and conditions of the client. The status of the apartment, hygienic conditions, the nature of food she buy and her way of presentation are some other additional information he or she will need to proceed the case. Though this is a general approach there is no evident risk associated with this therapy. However, if the therapist is not careful then he will miss some important points.
