As an engineering student I have learnt that there are many challenges in any kind of engineering. Developments and improvements are consistently making progress in every branch of engineering like mechanical, chemical, aviation, electrical, biomedical, and petroleum engineering to name a few. The expansion in the education field starting from high schools, colleges till the highest degree possible has created many engineers till date to excel in every field. The economy of any country relies mostly on engineering and the corporation invests heavily on developing the country in all aspects. Labor demand is normally balanced in any branch of engineering as the demand usually meets the supply.
The growth in computer engineering has been remarkable in the past few decades and considering the advances that have happened since its inception, I consider this division of engineering as a continuously growing field that can never stop innovation. Computer engineering also involves the electrical engineers to design the electrical circuit boards and all the necessary hardware components required in a computer. The computer engineers are generally knowledgeable in the field of electronics, software and hardware. When the initial computers were manufactured, they were huge, heavy and not environment friendly. Computers have not always been digital machines and through till 1970’s analogue computers were widely used particularly in science and engineering (Blundell 30). The operating system was totally command based and the user was required to be aware of the commands to use it.
There are two flavors in computer engineering namely software engineering and hardware engineering. The specialties of the combined effort of hardware and software engineering is seen in information security, cryptography, mobile networks, embedded systems, medicals, circuit designs and computer aided designing. The RAM that is used to boost the speed of the computer has less capacity compared to the levels now where it is as small as a chip. Software engineering alternatively has impacted almost every tech-savvy and non technical person in every mode of life. I see the growth and demand for labor in this branch as many products and internet services would be hosted on cloud computing in which the hardware and software is delivered to the consumer through the internet network. The demand of technically sound engineers in this field is a never ending requirement.
The current age is known as the Information Age as any information on anything is readily available on fingertips. Computer Engineering is a boon for the multimedia; advertising, mechanical designing and medical domains. There are countless engineers who complete their graduation every year, some are hired in campus recruitments and some are left out due to poor grades; however the companies and organizations require technically skilled engineers who have a flair for innovation. Though there is competition in every engineering aspect the demand would never be less for capable engineers.
Computer engineers brought in a revolution since the origin of the first computers and have now evolved them into iPads and laptops. This trend is poised to grow in the coming years and we would see a tiny computer that can be worn on the wrist, or kept in a pocket. It is a fact that requirements change over time and companies want to recruit the most talented engineer to be on their payroll, and this truth has not deterred my decision to continue my studies in computer engineering.
