Think about a conflict you had recently with another person. Was it a partner, friend, co-worker, etc? What caused the incident? How did it unfoldlike a tsunami with little or no warning, or like a small tropical storm building as it reaches the coast? What communication techniques did you use, or do you plan to use, to effectively resolve the conflict?
I was told to go to somewhere far away from the normal place of work that required a parking pass. “. I explained that “I was not aware that I would be working at another place away from where we usually work”. The person was not happy because they could not get a replacement and were left doing all the work. I told them that I need more information next time I tried to show empathy for the other person by agreeing to what they were saying and telling them my opinion on the matter. I also tried to use non threatening language.
Thinking back on the course and your interpersonal relationships, what skills from this course do you believe will help you with developing relationships or maintaining your current friendships or romantic relationships? How so?
I gained many skills such as how to can find out what is the best communication style for a situation or individual. I learnt that a different communication style is necessary for introverted and extroverted people and to consider individual’s culture, world view and past experiences in a conversation. The course also taught me how to reflect on a conversation so that one can improve communication. I learnt how to avoid conflict situation but also how to see conflict as necessary for getting an outcome from confusion and to fix a problem.
Consider your career goals or dream job. Consider what you learned in this course. On the discussion board, explain your dream job and three skills you learned, or refined, by taking this course. How do you believe you will be able to apply them to your chosen career or dream job? (Computer programming is my dream job).
My dream job would to be a computer programmer. I learnt three skills by taking this course. One was how to communicate with a variety of different people and stakeholders for projects. The second was how to negotiate conflict and come to a good solution. Another valuable skill learnt was a general one of not looking too closely at a given situation. It is often better to be aware of the bigger picture. For example rather than being scornful at a manager for giving you a job see it as part of the wider goals of the organization.
