Reporting to the idea of Condorcet that a democratic society that is free is only achieved when human beings master, in a competent way, the world of information, i.e. are educated, I agree with this statement. In fact, only when people have a strong understanding of what surrounds them, they can make true conscious decisions, knowing for certain what are the conditions and consequences of such. It is a rule, in my opinion, to build true democracy.
When people receive education, they do not just receive the ability to read and write. They also learn to think, to have complex ideas and to be curious about their world, and question it. The simple fact that they learn how to read brings to them a sense of better understanding of what surrounds them, because they are now able to decode the messages they find throughout the media. Reading those media, they become aware of their world and environment, of how it functions and its problems.
Given that humans are curious by nature, the fact that people learn how to read makes them able to further explore such curiosity to deeper levels and search for more and more information, which keeps on motivating their thoughts’ system and making it develop further more.
Being able to write, another basic education received, people learn to present their ideas, to put them on paper and be able to see them and organize them. Organized ideas on paper give a much more visual scenario of those people points of view; and the fact that these can be organized and analyzed on paper also makes those people able to further develop them into deeper and more complex ideas and points of view, which are also enlarged to a bigger number of subjects, which were, on their turn, brought up to their attention by their ability to read about them.
Thus, just the fact that one person is able to read and write is a massive gateway for the development of chains of thought and ideas/opinions about the world, which continue make way to more complex systems. If, together with this, there is an education frame that continues to develop the knowledge of such people and teaches them the opinions and conclusions of others in various areas, the systems of thought develop even more and the opinions grow in size and depth, not just about what they read, but also about their opinion and identification, faced with others’ points of view.
This creates in people the sense of being useful for their world, in order to find better solutions that can make their world better and, even, for others. This raises their level of thoughts to an active role in society. In such search for usefulness in the society’s life, and being all people at the same level in terms of knowledge and awareness about the world, ideas can be shared and discussed about numerous topics and problems that are found as important to be solved or improved, which is the core of the democratic way of a society to work.
All these people, who are at the same level of knowledge, are, conclusively, brought together into one big group that meets to bring to light important matters that regard their world, searching for each other’s opinion about the different topics and organizing their ideas together into plans that can be practically applied in the society, in order for it to function, or improve. If all the people that make part of such group are valid members who develop their points of view and feel confident to present and discuss them, searching for helpful conclusions and common ground, this is the true base of a democratic society, which, through this process, gives a voice to every single one of its members.
