Introduction
In the modern world set up, parents and their children have different opinions with regards to issues that concern their lives. The different thoughts always come in as a result of how the parents were brought up in different traditional setting. The traditional communities had values that they considered as important for any person growing up. As a result, the persons were contained at one point because of these values which did not push the people forward but dragged them backward. In most cases, immigrants brought in traditions and practices from their home country cultures to the Canada thus causing rigidity to the culturally diversified nation.
The paper will be looking at how the differences and failure to understand each other’s point of view is separating parents and children causing rifts in their relationships among the immigrant Punjab community.
Analysis
Punjabi parents are becoming less lenient to their children in terms of personal development
The traditional mindset displayed by parents towards their children is less lenient to them in terms of personal developments since they do not accept modern ideologies. In most cases, immigrant parents think of the modern ideologies as a way to erode the culture and traditions of their societies since they tend to accept the behaviors that were previously revoked by their traditions. Some traditional practices tend to prevent development of a person since they do not accept change. For example, the practice where some immigrant families do not accept marriage from different tribes that do not belong to them prevents change in the world. Diversity creates a leeway for development into a better society with more ideas and values that help people develop beyond a certain point in their lives.
Parents are becoming emotional while children are becoming more practical
Parents in the Punjabi immigrant community become more emotional because they think that their children neglect them due to what they decide to do. However, parents become more emotional about these facts but their children are more practical. Children look to move to other places to look for a way to make their lives better. In the long run, they end up consumed so much into their careers that they forget their parents back home. Parents on the other hand look at such a habit by the children as inappropriate since it tends to separate the children from their parents. Additionally, the children find more interest in getting money that they forget about the traditional values that the community holds for them.
The modern world looks at utilizing a person’s abilities to produce what is best for them. When the children of the Punjabi immigrant communities move to Canada, they look to have better careers, and better lives at the expense of their parent’s happiness. The parents find this selfish and inappropriate. However, the children are only getting consumed into their lives that separate them from the traditional ways of living among their community. Parents need to accept the fact that the children are more practical and adapting to the changes in the current environment that revolves around. For example, children are looking to move outside and explore on ways to become successful and as a result, they get consumed in the new life that they forget communicating with their parents.
The immigrants are unable to integrate into the new society
The Punjabi immigrants are used to their Indian lifestyle where they get a lot pf emotional attachment with their neighbors and the people surrounding them. In Canada, the immigrants are unable to acquire this emotional attachment since they cannot develop new relations easily. They live in neighborhoods where they do not know their neighbors thus they cannot relate to them. As a result, the immigrants find the emotional attachment with their children and when they decide to leave them, they find their lives difficult and unable to move on smoothly. The Punjabi immigrants thus look to have their children stay with them and continue to connect with them to enhance the emotional attachment which the children find hard to adapt to in their new lives.
The fact that the Punjabi parents cannot manage to accept the situations as they come, they drug their children behind with their emotional feelings that cannot help the children with their personal developments. The Punjabi parents drag their children behind with their problems in such a way that they cannot manage to develop beyond a certain point in their lives. For example, a parent might look to have a child intermarry with another community due to the traditions that bind the community.
How to deal with the conflicts positively
The Punjabi immigrant parents require finding a solution to their problems to reduce the conflict that arise between them and their children. The parents need to embrace the new life as part of them thus moving forward to promote development between them and their children. To enhance the interpersonal relationship, they can look for a way to communicate with their children where they are to avoid losing contact with them while they are working to develop themselves which is important. For example, a parent can decide to move out of their child’s house to allow them develop on their own. The parent can also move out and start a life of their own that is emotionless and developmental forgetting about the past life in India.
Conclusion
The Punjabi immigrants require a solution to their problem to develop and create strong relations between parents and children. When a person moves to a new life, there is a need to develop and become an important resource to the society that they will live in. The immigrant parents also need to adapt to the new life and embrace the fact that the world is changing and the modern world is different from the traditional life that they lived.
