Conflict at workplace is any disagreement or contradiction between workers at workplace. Thus, conflict at the workplace cannot be avoided. This is because workers at any workstation that is democratic will always have divergent opinion and perspective on various things. Therefore, due this divergent on the opinion and perspective conflict cannot be avoided. Conflict at workplace can also happen due to miscommunication between workers. Hence, management at the workplace must come up with mechanisms on how to solve conflicts amicably so that all parties work in harmony. Workers, who work in harmony, increase their productivity. This will also reflect on the quality of services the hotel offers to its customers (Horton et al., 2014)
There are various types of conflict as mention below
Intrapersonal conflict, this is a conflict within an individual mind. This conflict occurs when the individual has divergent opinion concerning his/her thoughts, emotions, and values. An individual may have a variety of options on how to handle certain issue that touch on his/her life (Rahim, 2011). For example working overtime to earn more money or go home and rest. This can cause stress or uneasiness on an individual that can be disastrous if it is not checked. This conflict can be solved if an individual has a platform to talk to others so as to share his/her dilemma.
Interpersonal conflict, this is a conflict between two people at the workplace. Workers at the workplace may have divergent opinions on how a certain task should be handled (Rahim, 2011). For example, whether to place an advert of the hotel services on the radio or television or social media. If this conflict is not handled properly, the best media for the advert will not be chosen. Therefore, the management of the hotel should put in place mechanism or guidelines on how to solve a conflict on touching on operation of the hotel.
Intergroup conflict, this is a conflict within a group. This can be conflict within the workers in the kitchen. For example, the cooks may differ on recipe to use to cook a certain meal. This also can be solved through proper communications between the workers (Rahim, 2011). The worker should check both recipes and choice one which will bring value to the hotel.
Intergroup conflict, this is a conflict between two groups. This can be conflict between the management and the workers of the hotel or conflict between the cooks and the waiters. This conflict if it is not handled properly, the operations of the hotel will be paralyzed. Thus, the management should have arbitrators who should be able to handle this kind of conflicts (Rahim, 2011).
The executives of the Marriott hotels oversee the operations of the hotels in more than 80 countries. Therefore, it should not ignore the value of handling conflicts from individual, interpersonal to groups’ conflicts (Marriott Hotels, 2014). This is because if the conflicts are not addressed, the operations of these hotels will be affected. This will compromise the service delivery to its customers all over the globe, and the hotel may lose its customers.
