- Can you think of an example of private/institutional health policy that directly affected your work? Please explain.
The implementation of policies whether private or institutional it has an impact on the lives of the society. The implementation of health policy that banned restaurants from selling food to obese people really influenced my work. This is because most of my customers were obese and the policy demands that I should not serve them. The policy makers should share information with the healthcare providers, attorneys, health practitioners. This will ensure that the laws made support the best practices that will help eradicate obesity. Obesity comes because of many multi-faceted factors ranging from environment, behavioral and genetics.
- Going through each of the four major health policy stages, what do you think is a critical condition in order for the stage to be successful?
Health policy is a course of action that government or health care organizations take to produce a desired outcome in terms of health. The process of health care policymaking shapes the health care industry including the private and the public sectors. The policies that relate to the public health come from state, local or court rulings that govern the provision of the medical services. The private policies relate to business and institutions, are developed in the private sector by organizations like hospitals, and managed health care organizations. The process of the policy formulation consistsof problem identification phase, formulation phase, implementation phase and evaluation phase. Decision making and planning are the critical issues that ensure the policy will work for the best of the society. Politics is another issue that affects policies and sound policies can only be implemented basing on correct and accurate information. All the health care stakeholders should be part of the policy-making process.
- Share an example of the following types of policy with which you have personal experience: operational decisions, rules and regulations, and laws.
Rules and regulations guide the implementation of the laws. They are made by the organization bringing the law or the executive branch. An example of rules and regulation is when an organization says that it is important every person to have insurance. Operational decisions have protocols that follow the operation of the new law. An example of operational decision is the provision of privacy of patient’s medical information.
