A theory can be described as a rational statement that is consistent in nature .The nursing theories are useful in descriptions and presentations of systematic views about a particular phenomena. Nursing theories are important in the definition, presentation and dissemination of knowledge in the nursing industry. The theories act as a framework in which nurses can systemize their nursing actions (Alligood and Marriner 67).
This research paper focuses on the borrowed theories that have been incorporated into the nursing curriculum .It further describes one of the theories and how it has been put into effect in the future nursing setting.
Importance of nursing theories
The theories are used in the definition of the common practices that are consistent in the nursing practice. They help in the guidance of the nurses in their day to day activities .This in turn helps nurses predict the nature of their work and the response that is expected by their patients(Alligood and Marriner 67 .Nursing theories therefore act as a blue print for the nurses so as they can perform their work effectively.
Different nursing theories
Grand nursing theories are theories that belong to the most broad category .The serve as a more generalized combination of theories and present general concepts in the nursing field. These theories may have a disadvantage in that they are not designed for empirical testing .The grand nursing theories are therefore limited to directing ,explaining and predicting nursing different situations .These theories apply to all situations in nursing(Woods 45).
Mid range nursing theories are narrower in scope as opposed to grand nursing theories. They tend to focus on specific areas of nursing and provide amore elaborate descriptions that concern different nursing situations. They also act as a bridge between the grand nursing theories and practice nursing theories (Alligood and Marriner 67) .Due to their elaborate definitions on the nursing theories; they hold a high amount of promise for nursing practices (Woods 45).
Nursing practices can be described as the application of the general nursing theories .This theories are more hands on and are designed to accommodate specific types of nursing situations .They also predict outcomes of the research of the grand nursing theories and the mid range nursing theories .They therefore seek to prove the validity of the proposed theories (Woods 46).
How the nursing practices can be applied to a current nursing setting
Since the mid range nursing theories are empirical in nature and require consistent testing .It has proven to be very useful in the nursing research in that it offers improvement of the performance of nurse’s .After a theory has been proven it is usually put into effect. This is carried out in the practice nursing theories .The mid range nursing theory is therefore important in the testing of new or borrowed theories that can be introduced into the future nursing practice setting (Alligood and Marriner 68).
Borrowed theories refer to theories that have been taken from a different practice and incorporated to a practice in this case nursing .Some of the most important theories that have been incorporated in the nursing practice were not originally practiced in the nursing field. It is essential for the nursing industry to continue developing and up with more original concepts that can improve the nursing practice (Alligood & Marriner 67).
The Theory of Planned behavior
According to this theory behavior is determined by the perception control and the intent to performing a specific behavior. This theory has been in the category of the mid range theory in that it has been tested and thus proven to be effective when dealing with patients (Alligood and Marriner 67). This theory states that a person’s perception of behavior can vary according to the intent of the person This means that if the intention to perform as particular task is strong then their is a high chance that the act will be performed .People thus perform a particular behavior when they view it as positive. Nurses can use the research on this theory and apply it in their nursing practice which involves their interaction with patients.
The theory can be used to determine how a patient will react to a particular scenario. If we consider patients behavior towards the use of a particular medication, a person’s intention to use a particular medication leads to the person immediate use of the medication. This helps the nurse react accordingly so as to prevent situations that would have been uncontrollable. The theory of planned behavior is important in the evaluation of the reaction of several patients who may have undergone a particular diagnosis or treatment .It therefore assists the nurses in their approach to different medical situations which involve their patients. This theory is important in the application of future nursing practices which involves the behavior of a particular patient (Alligood and Mariner 67).
Conclusion
Nursing is a calling unlike other areas of study .One cannot practice nursing without the guidance of how to deal with different medical situations. The nursing theories are therefore essential for the effective practice of nursing .These theories when applied well make the nursing practice more manageable thus increases the development of the nursing industry as a whole.
