1. Title of the article – How Bingeing become the new college sport
In this article I expect to find a brief description of bingeing and its roots. A brief development of this activity will probably be followed by a problem. This problem is most likely to be described and perhaps a couple of solutions would be presented.
2. The topic of this article is “pregaming”. This type of activity very often results in hospitalization of young students and the author believes that there is a way to stop this. He sees the reason of the change in drinking habits in the legal drinking age. The author believes that if the drinking age was reduced to 18, such overboard behaviors would not happen. Alcohol would not be the forbidden fruit to many young men and women and so they will learn to consume the way adults should.
3. I have not heard anything about pregaming, but it does seem like a very likely issue. In the modern world, alcohol, to students under 21, really does seem like the forbidden fruit. It is something not allowed and so this is the best way to rebel for any reason. At 18 we get our voting rights, we are pronounced adults but at the same time are still being treated like little children. We need to be allowed to grow up completely and to not find a need to rebel. When something is allowed, there is no reason to turn to it to prove a point. From my experience I can say that my best motivation to do something is being told that I cannot do it. People may forbid me to do it or they may simply not believe that I am capable of this. The best way to prove them wrong is to go through with it. Of course alcohol is not the best thing to abuse and both little and big kids know it. What they also know is that they can handle the responsibility if only such could be given to them.
4. The article talks about pregaming. It is among the first things that “needs” to be done when a freshman moves in. People get together in a room and take shots, many shots. This often leads to hospitalization, food poisoning and even death. Many college officials say that the legal age is not helping them. The fact that young people are only allowed to drink at 21, does not give the option to supervise the drinking. Young people simply don’t get a chance to learn how to use a right which will be theirs, and so they abuse it. In the colleges where the drinking age is 18, hospitalizations are a lot rarer. It is true that many freshmen first go overboard but they soon learn to consume alcohol properly and become the adults they were meant to become. The author believes that congress needs to decrease the legal drinking age, as it will lead to smarter drinking among young men and women.
