“Still I Rise”, “Phenomenal Women” and “Alone” are one of the well known works by Maya Angelou, and all three are associated with the reflections of human nature with two of them dealing with women specifically. If we read the biography of Maya Angelou we will relies that in all three poems she has actually highlighted the issues that she has faced in her life which were basically related to racism, sexist image of women and the desire to go away from the evils of the society.
The beauty lies in the internal character and not the outer looks, this is another important inference that comes out in all three poems and on one hand where “Still I rise” shows how important it is to find the goodness hidden in a woman? Phenomenal Women also highlights the power of a good character, “Alone” talks about the same but a gender specific is not targeted in this case.
Another important feature and common element in all these three works is the theme of “hope” while the subject and the central theme may be different, the ending is positive and is built strongly to provide hope and give encouragement to women and men. Lastly all these three poems talk about humanity and help realize the social problems but in the end suggest that it’s our world and we are the ones who can make it a better place to live.
