Arguably, leadership is very important factor in every organization. There are tremendous evolutions of team leadership in society today. Team leadership has evolved over time and continues to make evolve. One of the changes includes accountability and responsibility in leadership rather than team leadership. In the past, the responsibility of team leadership was more of a group. Recently, leadership has evolved and focuses more on accountability. The responsibility of leadership has shifted from team leadership to the hands of individuals.
The next generation of team leadership is characterized by high performance. The leadership in the past was more of making decisions on what is to be done. Leadership entails both making decision and executing the decisions made to create output. Team leadership in the past dependent more on the leaders in making decisions, nowadays leadership entails participative management (Daft & Lane, 2008). The decision making process is all inclusive as it involves everyone in the team and organization. Team leadership has also evolved to be more focused on achieving the best in the organization.
The traits of team leadership have also shifted from authoritative style to participative leadership. This evolution has made leadership very effective in society today. In addition, team leadership has seen the improvement of ability to manage priorities and expectations. This includes managing the expectations and priorities of employees, shareholders, community, investors, as well as suppliers (Daft & Lane, 2008).
Technology is also another tool to be recognized in the evolution of leadership today. The team leadership is expected to be self-centered and self-leadership. The advancement of technology has improved the path of leadership and has lead to exploitation of ideas, creativity, and innovation. The team leadership is moving away from team-ness to a new environment of individual performer. The success of an organization is believed to come from individual level rather than depending on external leadership (Daft & Lane, 2008).
Based on my personal experience team leadership has evolved. In the past, we use to meet as a team under the leadership of an individual in the team. As time went by, we had to shift the trend due from team leadership to individual’s leadership. Perhaps, with internet in place everyone one a leader since we communicated and interacted through internet. This is a clear indication of how evolution in team leadership is taking place.
