The novel The Rector of Veilbye is told from the point of view of Erik Sorensen. Sorensen played the role of both the judge and sheriff in the community. The amount of responsibilities placed on his shoulders caused many emotional turmoil and conflict for Sorensen. He was set to marry Mette who was the daughter of Soren Qvist, a man accused of murdering his servant Niels Bruus. The conflict was that Erik wanted to marry Mette and clear her father’s name from the murder. However, more witnesses offered testimonies that further pushed Soren Qvist as the suspect to the murder. The result of this was Erik became distraught and confused. He loved Mette but he also had a role to serve justice in their community.
Despite the conflict between personal and professional duties, the statements of the witnesses forced Erik to question Rector Qvist. This was again a difficult act for him as this would make marrying the love of his life impossible. The rector did not remember the murder but because of the undeniable pieces of evidence pointing him as the perpetrator he decided to confess that he did commit the murder.
The confession of the rector made the situation more complicated for Erik as he knew that as a judge he had to do something after the revelation. In the end, he sentenced the rector to be beheaded. His relationship with Mette became impossible. He lived a life of loneliness following the departure of Mette from their town. Following all the emotional conflicts felt by then Judge Erik Sorensen, the story shifted vantage points as told from the diary entries of the new rector of the town.
The new rector revealed that a beggar visited him introducing himself as Niels Bruus who was the alleged murder victim of the previous rector. Bruus shared that they planted pieces of evidence against rector Qvist as revenge after he rejected the brother of Bruus as a suitor of Mette. The shocking revelation was intended to be kept a secret from Erik but Bruus met the judge and as a result the judge collapsed from heart attack. The following day, Bruus was found lifeless beside the grave of the rector Qvist.
In conclusion, the conflict experienced by Judge Erik was between his duty and personal obligations. He had a role as judge and sheriff to fulfil and even if it was difficult for him, he sentenced his soon-to-be father-in-law to death. He paid greatly as he lost the woman he loved. To make it more difficult for him, two decades after the life-changing decision, it was revealed to him that no murder happened and he sentenced an innocent man to death because of someone else’s revenge plot. The rector was a kind man who confessed to the murder even if deep inside he knew he had no involvement. The people behind the sinister plot were pure evil who used the rector’s kindness against himself.
The guilt and shame of falling to the revenge plot caused Erik to succumb to his heath condition. He could not believe that he made a wrong judgement by believing the testaments of planted witnesses. Deep inside he wished he had done a better job of analyzing the case and not solely rely on the voices of the majority. The situation conspired against him it ended as a tragedy for everyone in the story.
