There are various actions that I would consider implementing to ensure that I fit in the society. One of the key aspects that I would consider is adapting to the change in climatic conditions. The changes in climate are one of the significant aspects that majorly influenced the English settlers in Jamestown (Sharpe 102). This would be possible by adapting to the natural environment just like the ancient Indians. I would freely interact with the Indians and adapt to the methods that they use to adapt to changes in the environment. Eating foods similar to that of the natives is another aspect that I would consider being able to adapt to the environment. This would make me obtain resistance to the diverse diseases.
Another option that I would take if I was in the development of Jamestown is participating and working hard for the Virginia Company. This would enable me to earn more money at a remarkably short span of time. I would then use the money to buy large pieces of lands that I would practice tobacco farming. I would also purchase African slaves that would provide the necessary workforce needed in the farms. Through hard work, I would make more money which I would, use to buy more food. During the starvation time, most of the English settler died because of lack of food. This was triggered by lack of proper management of the little available resources. Therefore, I would prevent this through distribution of enough food and storing the extra food that remains. Farming in the fields would ensure that there is enough food for everyone.
Most of the residents of Jamestown who was European merchants decided to indulge in tobacco farming so that they could be able to earn a living. This was through planting tobacco and exporting it to the neighboring nations. This is also one of the key concepts that I would also participate fully to ensure I earn a living. The significant action that I would take is planting the tobacco in large-scale farms. This would enable me to harvest enormous amounts of tobacco (Sharpe 132). The next move that I would initiate is building communication links with the other business partners in London. This would give me an easy experience in exporting tobacco to England because of the direct link. Through the purchase of the tobacco, I would acquire more money that would be enough for my family.
As a resident in the new Jamestown, there are different challenges that I faced that made it exceedingly difficult for me to survive in the town. At first the manner in which I got in Jamestown was deceiving. Inquired information that Jamestown was rich in Gold and I would become rich if I would work for the Virginia Company (Sharpe 121). I finally realized that it was to be false after I reached the land. Instead of searching for Gold and mining, there was starvation, wars from the native Indians. Since I would acquire wealth, I decided to accept the offer travels to Jamestown and become one of the workers. This was to seek fortune and be able to provide the basic needs of my other family members.
However, I was better off than the other kidnapped people from the streets and forced to participate in the war against the Indians. After various attempts of failure of colonizing the native Indians, the English colony decided to acquire more men. Since remarkably few people were wiling to participate in the war, the Virginia Company kidnapped men from the street. Others were also obtained from the society especially if they had participated in crime scenes. Other men were also seduced by the various false advertisements concerning the town of Jamestown. The Virginia Company deceived people of how the town of Jamestown had a gold mine. The people were also informed of how they would get rich as a faster rate if they worked in the gold mines. Through these diverse ways, the Virginia Company was able to obtain the required population that would work in the tobacco firms.
My life in Europe was a struggle since I had to endure all the harsh conditions that I was not exposed to before. There were various challenges that I had to face in order to be able to survive. For example, there was a span of various months when there was no food supply from the stores. This period, the starving time, caused by the injury that Smith sustained in his limbs after an explosive of the gunpowder. This forced him to be shipped back to England for the key reason of obtaining proper treatment. This was in the year 1609 when there was no proper leadership in the Virginia Company (Sharpe 142).
Another problem that we endured is the lack of a common religion because of the intermixing of different cultures, which had different religious beliefs. Each of the culture present in the town of Jamestown had a different religious background which gave me hard times. According to my understanding, various challenges happened because of lack of a common understanding and religion that would promote peace among the people. Although life in the new land was tough, at the long run the Virginia Company discovered tobacco, and most of us become farmers (Sharpe 145). This enabled me to be able to earn a living since through purchasing tobacco in England. After working for the Virginia Company, I was able to get more money that enabled me to purchase my own land.
