Creative Writing On The Wonder Of Music As A Way To Reflect Art And War

Art is one of the most important elements of life and humanity – without it, we are unable to express our true feelings. Art is used to convey emotions and make statements; it can say anything from the personal to the political. To me, music is the genre of art I admire the most, especially as a medium for messages on the nature of art and war alike. Music, through its complex nature and its versatility, can often say many different things about the nature of art and war.
Music, as an art form, has the incredible potential for complexity – there is a whole world of instruments used within it, and centuries of music theory and history to draw from. Music from a particular time period or geographical region can tell us a great deal about the concerns of the time, the culture that produced it, and so on. Classical music from the Romantic and Baroque periods were often about very human stories, as well as expressions of Christian religiosity. Conversely, modern dance music expresses a desire for communal hedonism and so on.
One of the biggest topics music can weigh in on is war – many works have been created to comment on the nature of war, whether for it or against it. Famous recent examples include the protest songs penned during the 1960s to rally people against the Vietnam War; songs like Hendrix’s “All Along the Watchtower” elaborate on the dangers of war and the decline of human dignity. Whether music is expressing artistic designs of beauty, or railing against the horrors of war, it remains one of the most effective genres of art in history.
