Love was the emancipating zeal, the spark in the darkness which lit up my heart and left me enthralled at the thought of the transcendental beauty of life. It rendered the heart-beat to the living, brought tears to the eyes. These were tears of thankfulness and joy. Life seemed futile sans the caressing touch of the beloved. Sharing a smile together, holding hands and walking in the rain were Utopian dreams which made the heart pound. Indeed, God had made life beautiful in the affect of love—the deepest and pious of all emotions. Love could reach beyond the boundaries of the temporal world. It endured the brutal scythe of time and promised immortality. The first moment of wakefulness in the morning never seemed sweeter before. The journey of life seemed the most exquisite walk down the alley of happiness and surreal realm of love. I was a romantic, lost in the swirling motions which left the heart in a state of tumultuous emotions longing for the beloved.
Love, however, had changed its meaning to me. Was it not the ideal which we longed for all our lives, but failed to feel? Was there anything called unconditional love? The world had left me disillusioned and I could finally step out of the childish cocoon which had kept in inside the auspicious lands of the ideal. The pragmatic now was like as clear as crystal to me. Vested interests, materialism and the society had assassinated the innocent heart. It laid its baleful clutches on the most sacred emotion which once was the epitome of life and happiness. Love now came with a ‘conditions apply’ which left the concept marred with the drudgeries. Love was nothing but a vague word which drove gazillion in the search for the Pandora’s Box which they would never find.
With age and experience, the concept of love has found a metamorphosis in my life. I now question the piety of love and search for the hidden truth which lies veiled behind the insurmountable beauty of love. Am I a cynic? Do not know. But, surely I have learnt to see life differently.
