Sustainability is rapidly emerging as a key market driver with an immense potential to grow profits whilst presenting opportunities for creation of value in terms of environmental and social responsibility. Unlike the traditional way of focusing purely on returns on investment, costs and supply chain risk, many companies have nowadays dramatically evolved and shifted their focus in capitalizing on products that appeal to their clients as being environmentally and socially superior in their attributes. Every company nowadays is talking about ‘going green’ so as to be perceived and be regarded by their customers as corporate bodies that are not only profit hungry but also care about the welfare of the society and the environment at large. In this paper, I will outline the features and benefits of an innovative product that greatly appealed to me as a sustainability-oriented product.
After a thorough investigation and analysis on a sustainability-oriented product, I settled on the Water Saver Toilet which is being made and distributed by an Australian company; The Royal Flush company. This company claims that their innovative cisterns are able to save a family of four approximately 40,000 liters of water in a year, this translates to more 10,000 gallons of water saved in the course of the year. Surprisingly, it is a remarkably simple invention which collects the soapy ‘grey water’ from the hand-wash basin to its cistern. This simple invention is beneficial to the customers since it is small in size, it saves a lot of space and is therefore perfect for small spaces in offices and homes. It is socially responsible since it seeks to save on the low amounts of water which is at our disposal. In addition, the cistern is made from a very durable plastic resin, this means that the customers are offered a durable product at a relatively lower cost. This invention benefits the company by ensuring that they make profits from their investments for their products are made from readily available recyclable materials. Additionally, there is the feeling of self satisfaction by the company because of ensuring that they are playing their part in being environmentally responsible.
However, despite the many advantages that comes with this highly sustainable product, people are still using the traditional cistern toilets that use large amounts of water. Although this simple invention will not be able to solve the global shortage of water, it shows our desire to being socially and environmentally responsible individuals.
