- What is the reporter package about?
This report package discussed how the Egyptian Military performed the “virginity checks” on female protestor who had been arrested in Tahrir Square on March 9th,2010.
- Do you think this is a legitimate news story? Explain why you think so by using news judgment characteristics.
Yes, I do think it is a legitimate news story. First of all, in this report package, the reporter interviewed the victim of the assault. That added credibility to the news story. Secondly, they used a quote from a famous human rights organization Amnestyinternational, which added credibility to the story as well. Thirdly, this report was done by CNN, a global news network that is specialized on world and domestic news.
- Was the report easy to understand? Why or why not?
Yes, this report was very easy to understand. It is well documented and the visual aid helped in comprehending the report.
- Do the visuals help to explain the story or is it "wallpaper" broll? Explain.
Yes, the visual helped to explain the story. Instead of using “wallpaper”broll, they used the actual footage from the protest to give the audience a sense of what was going on in Egypt. They also used the quotations from Amnesty International, thus, the interview with the victim and the reporter was effective in building up this story. They used the visual aid strategically, and told this horrific story without being too graphic.
- Who was interviewed? Do the sound bites advance the story? Why or why not?
A CNN reporter, Ivan Watson, interviewed a victim called Salwa Hosseini. The sound bite definitely helped to advance the story. The image of the victim pictured is absolutely appalling. That helped the audience to understand the situation.
- What do you think about the reporter standup?
I think the CNN reporter did a fantastic job on the standup. He used different tones to emphasize words in order to make his point. He also used hand gestures to make his point clear. The only suggestion I had for this package is the sound could be smoother at the transition between the interview and the standup.
