Introduction
Personal decisions or social values should be carefully evaluated by any business leader who is in the verge of making any decision. This is because personal decisions may have far reaching implications on any organization if not well made. It is therefore important for any business leader to be considerate before making such decision especially in a large organization.
Social values may dictate decision-making in an organization. Social values are closely related to “informal expressions of a community that defines a well-defined sense of normalcy and expects members of the community to follow” (Davidrajuh 6). These values are to be considered by business leaders before making any decision in regard to any business. Any business leader has to make decisions bearing in mind the social expectations of the society. When the society sets new standards on the way its people for instance are supposed to dress, a business entity which deals with manufacturing of clothes has to make a quick decision to adhere to the society’s expectation less they run out of business.
Business decisions should be made carefully because they are aimed at ensuring the business makes profits with regard to all the factors affecting it. I was once working for a gas company which was located in Southern California. This company is one of the oldest gas companies in Southern California with reports that it existed before 1900. This company was and is still known as Southern California Gas Company. It enjoyed monopoly as the only gas company in the area for quite sometime. After sometime better and alternative sources of energy were introduced by other companies and as expected competition. The management had to look for alternative ways of putting up with the competition as well as ensuring that they retain their customers. Emergence of these new entrepreneurs such as Thomas Edison and his introduction of electric lighting system meant that it was not business as usual in our company. We started looking for alternative uses of gas and that is how we came up with stoves and heaters both of which used gas for their proper functioning.
We all agreed to work hard and do a lot of research to please our customers. On the same note the managers decided to drop the prices of our gas to first ensure that our customers did not start pledging allegiance to the new companies. This was a great advantage to the customers but some of the company decision makers were not in agreement to that suggestion. They saw this decision as a big blow to the company’s income. They also came up with a decision to introduce different ways of revising our natural gas operations (omnibus 1). Some of these changes were; nomination cycle which were made available to assist customers strike a balance between their modes of deliveries and their usage, interruptive storage injection and withdrawal. This included availing a website for the customers allowing them to make enquiries and orders to the company. These and many other changes were aimed at making the customer satisfied together with retaining them. This was a good move but the only mistake according to me was concentrating too mush on the customer and forgetting those of us who run the activities of the company. Demand on our commodities was high but the only problem was that the employees were forgotten. As the number of customers increased demand a lot of pressure increased on the part of the employees.
This forced the managers of the company to call several meetings to ensure that they complains of the workers were considered. The key thing here is that in any decision making, those involved must consider all the parties involved to ensure that no stakeholder feels threatened and being acted upon.
