Critical Thinking On Factorial Design

1. In this factorial design the dependent variable is the success of participants on both recognition tests. The result will depend on previous experience of the participant with the formulation of questions that he/she had to answer. It will also depend on the type of the recognition test that is given. Therefore, we call this variable dependent variable.
2. Independent variables in this design are the formulation of the questions and the type of the recognition test. The first variable- the formulation of the questions is representing whether the questions were formulated to increase interest in the meaning of the words (semantics) or in the pronunciation (the sound of the words). The second variable-the type of the given recognition test is showing what kind of test participants undergo, standard recognition test or rhyme recognition test.
3. The variable “type of the recognition test” was used as between subjects manipulation since the two groups of the subjects solved two different types of tests, so that each participant had to solve only one test depending on which group he was assigned to.
4. Having in mind the results of this research and the experimental design it can be concluded that the interaction between two independent variables is a crossover interaction. Not only that the effect of the first variable was different across the two levels of second variable, it was also reverse. The participants did better with words from the questions that involved semantics on the standard recognition test, but the other group which had the rhyme recognition test did poorer on recognizing these words but better on words whose pronunciation was accented in the questions.
