Mexican culture undoubtedly belongs to the number of death-accepting ones, for the notion of death permeates every aspect of it without being grim or depressive one. There is, e.g., the festival called “The Day of the Dead” which may bear some resemblance to Halloween but is, in fact, completely different in its core. The Mexicans consider it to be the day of reunion between themselves and their dead relatives and loved ones, who are not considered to be some ghastly otherworldly spirits but just the same people they used to be, only on a different stage of existence. The Mexicans don’t just apply morbid stylistics of death to use it as a decoration – they actually and wholeheartedly welcome their dead to come back among the living and celebrate the reunion together. The deceased loved ones are perceived more as if they were just away on a long trip than the shades of people who once truly existed but no longer do. During this festival Mexicans do not mourn their dead, but do their best to make sure they would be happy if they happen to visit them. And it is only one aspect of their culture, in addition to a rather popular cult of the Saint Death and overall treatment of death as just another phenomenon of existence that doesn’t fall under any kind of taboo.
In my opinion, such an approach to death is somewhat more wholesome and practical than the one almost universally accepted in Western culture, which in the course of time made death an almost obscene topic to discuss. Why should we treat our loved ones differently only because they are dead?
