Santo Domingo remains to be the largest city, and at the moment it is the Dominican Republic’s capital city. Founded by Bartholomew Columbus on the year 1492, it has been the longest settlement of people from Europe in America. The city’s leadership has changed for quite many times. According to the city’s history, it has been controlled by the Spanish, French and the rebellious slaves from Haiti before eventually attaining its independence back in the year 1844. With all the vital operations and services located there, makes it suitable to serve at the seat of the government. This history and information was retrieved from various articles about the city, which is very vital place to the entire world in general and the Caribbean. Many prominent city planners who build modern cities have used it as their initial set up. After its establishment, the city became the site for the first cathedral, hospital convents and university for people from America. It was used also for purposes of trade as a center for trade with the neighboring coasts as it was strategically placed.
This week’s reading has been very helpful as it helps one to get a wide understanding about the city of Santo Domingo. It unveils the long history of the city and the many challenges it encountered. As a matter of fact, the city played a crucial role in holding its place in the world. The city was used as the dock during the trade serving the purpose of a stopping point for the Spanish ships. Santo Domingo city also formed a very strategic way for communications and travel with other islands and coasts within the Caribbean.
