ALDI’s Expansion in Australia
Aldi’s is a foreign-owned (German) mid-sized supermarket chain that offers food as well as electrical products and other varieties of goods. It has not required the huge retail space of the big box department stores. In 2009 Aldi reported plans of expansion in Australia due to the success the business had encountered there. Aldi has its own private label and the prices coupled with the label have proved popular with Australian customers. By June 2009 Aldi’s had “built two distribution centers near Sydney and Victoria along with a product development and quality assurance center in Minchinbury, New South Wales. Aldi now has over 230 stores in Australia focused on four east territories: Queensland, Victoria, New South Wales and Australian Capital Territory” () In October 2011 Aldi announced an expansion of up to thirty supermarkets throughout Australia, the purpose being to compete with Coles and Woolworths. Greenblat (2011) reported that the German supermarket chain had stated a plan to reinvest $200 million in the Australian branch of the international supermarket chain. (para. 1)
ALDI’s in Bankstown, Australia
Jobs for Sales Assistants are being advertised right now on the Internet at the SimplyHired.com webpage. The redevelopment started in November 2011 when the Bankstown Council’s Development Committee approved expansion of the department store, addition of new specialty shops, addition of another parking level (150 spaces) and landscape improvements (Local, 2011, Express). Local residents raised worries at the time that the expansion would cause negative impact on the Norfolk Reserve. The Council did not allow any work or trash dumping in the reserve. (Local, 2011, Express) Now in June 2012 Aldi is offering new jobs for employees to fill positions in the newly expanded store.
