When talking about gender abortion and arguing for or against it, one must look at the issue from both sides. It is easy to say that this is gender inequality and it is the same as killing a life. However, these straight accusations are quite unfair when not all the factors are taken into consideration. There are just as many arguments for as there are against sex-selective abortion.
Some believe that any kind of abortion is equal to murder. They also underline that it is the same as a human taking another human’s life. However, when looked upon from a biological perspective, the fetus during the first trimester, when most abortions take place, cannot exist without the mother. Thus, it should not be considered as a separate entity. Others urge to give up children for adoption instead, but regardless of the example in the movie Juno, very little amount of mothers actually can go through with giving their child away after birth. There is just something about holding in your hard that little bundle of joy. Nevertheless, abortions are also considered dangerous. While some urge that abortion is a completely safe procedure, especially during the first semester, there are women for whom abortion is completely forbidden if they ever want to have kids again. However, physical dangers are not the only ones. There is also very much stress and psychological trauma connected with this procedure, but, once again, studies show that post-abortion syndrome does not exist. According to them, the most stressful period is that right before the abortion.
All of these are argument are connected with normal abortion. However, sex-selective abortion only adds argument for it. While some consider it as gender inequality, it is hard not to show some understanding to the families who decide to go through with it. Even though gendercide is illegal in China and India and doctors are not even allowed to tell the parents the gender of their future child, it still takes place. In such countries as India, Pakistan and Taiwan this issue is especially crucial. Unfortunately, in most cases and according to most reasoning, it is the future girls that suffer. They are an economic disadvantage for some and are devalued by the culture of others.
Girls are not only physically weaker than boys are. In some countries, parents have to pay to get them married and yet cannot await any financial help from her once she is. In some cultures it is the boys, who are expected to take care of their parents once they get old. So who can blame the parents, who just want to be taken care of in their old age? Who can blame them for wanting to have a safe future not only for themselves but also for their children? What about the parents who want to have more than one child? They look forward to watching their children play and support each other but cannot legally have another child if the first one ends up being a girl. However hard and immoral gender abortion may seem, I can understand the parents who decide to go through with it. I am sure that it is not easy for them and they have many doubts. Yet, if their culture completely supports it, then who are we to meddle with it?
