In the world over the years, various ages have come and gone. Some ages don’t go but stay with us for along time. Those that go become history, but the ages that persist form part of our daily life. In the history of our world, various ages have come and others have come and gone. We have read in the history books about the ice age, the Iron Age when mankind used iron in making his tools and so on. Over along time now, we have been characterized by changes in technology and fast movement of information. This period has come to be known as the information age.
Information age will refer to a period in our past and present that has witnessed a wide and fast flow of information around the world. This period have been better described/referred to as the computer age and sometimes to as the information era. Information age in better terms involves fast and free flow of information. This also involves the speed at which the same in formation can be retrieved. In deeper perspective, the information age can be viewed to have originated from the change from traditional industry to the industrial revolution and economy rooted in the manipulation of information.
This age gets its name from the fact that the information flows very first from one part to another-from one city to another; country to another or even around the continents. The fast flow of information has led to another concept known as globalization .sometimes the term globalization will mean the same as information age. Both are intertwined because, like we see, one builds into the other. That is it’s the information age that gave rise to globalization. And globalization helped grow the information age.
So, now that the whole concept of the information age is clear, we then have to ask ourselves the promoters /triggers of this age. Like any other age in history, there is always a cause. Ice age for example was caused by changes in the climate, the Iron Age by the need of man to make stronger tools for his survival; if this is so, it means that our information age must too have had a cause. And what are these cause/causes/triggers.
Like we will find out, the causes here are not from climate change! On the contrary, the triggers of this age will be seen as originating from the development /improvement in technology and man’s need to communicate fast and efficiently. To many people, the term technology will almost mean the development of the computer. This is true of the term,” information age” in the beginning of this discussion; I began by defining the term as the computer age. This implies that like other people, I passive the development of computers as the development of the information age.
What then does this imply to us? The obvious thing is that, in the rise and development of this age, computers have had a big share-and television too. These two products of technology have promoted the fast flow of information. Computers and televisions are all classified in an age we call.” the digital age”. With computers, information is manipulated through such services as internet. Any information needed from any part of the world is readily available at the click of the mouse. On the other hand; televisions too have helped carry information fast such that it is possible to follow a live coverage of news in America from as far as Asia, at the comfort of your room.
There has been claim among scholars that much of postmodern literature, art and architecture is funny and also has tended to believe that humor and parody are so important to postmodern expression, why? To answer this question, I need to revisit the whole concept of postmodernism, in literature, art and architecture. Like mentioned here above, postmodern literature, art and architecture has been seen as “funny”. This comes from the fact that post modernism has had its place in literature, art and architecture. Postmodernism has displayed such features as ironic plays that have featured styles narratives levels and citations. In post modernism, there has been a tendency of putting importance on what is virtual at the peril of what is real. There has been also a notice of affects on those subjects that find themselves ensnared in the free interplay of virtual.
Postmodernism can be viewed as being funny for it advocates that we see all realities as being mere social constructs. This movement goes beyond the normal. How for example can we not fail to us sharp classifications when viewing our world? How can we see man and a woman differently from the way they are? Or black in comparison to white? The truth of the matter is that in a real world, sharp classifications can’t be avoided.
In postmodernism, serious issues are often treated playfully and humorously. Serious happenings such as death in post modernism will for example be narrated humorously with the narrator remaining emotionally detached from the story. In postmodernism, humor and parody are so important in that, these marks a departure from modernism, these aspects give postmodernism its characteristic feature. Parody for example is used in postmodernism as a tool of refusing an ideological position.
Post modernism can be viewed as satire. There is no clear definition of what really is postmodernism, it’s satirical for some scholars then to even call themselves post modernist. If he/she does not know clearly what he is studying , then we stand to reason that going ahead into associating yourself with a discipline you hardly understand is highly laughable. The truth of the matter, the term “postmodernism” is just a word that stands for an idea. Postmodernism originates from modernism. There are those that view it as a threat while on the other hand others will see it as the emancipator.post modernism tries to examine/question the reality itself. This is satirical bearing in mind it is an offshoot of modernity that sought to find new ways of explaining reality.
