- Summary
Leading manufacturer of mobile, digital, consumer and television technology, Samsung, the South Korean corporation, has initiated a massive sale from August 1, 2014 the first TV-transformer Samsung UN78S9B. It has a flexible screen, changing its shape from flat to curve. Such models have not been produced yet by any single manufacturer, so the company can be considered a pioneer in this niche of the market.
The first analog of released foldaway TV was put on public on January of the current year at the exhibition of Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. However, the diagonal of showpiece was 85 inches, and for the sale the company presented a 78 inch model. Perhaps, Koreans want to experience the novelty on buyers and assess the real market demand for such things. However, this TV is also very big. 3840 × 2160 pixels of the screen resolution belong to the format is better known as 4K.
The mechanism of the Samsung UN78S9B model lies in the fact that the TV has the usual flat form in the normal position. After pressing a button on the distant control device, the specific motors are activated and brought the edges of the screen closer to the observer, changing it from a flat to curve. If the person presses the special button again, the screen flexes mechanism to its original flat position. By the way, to increase the contrast and uniformity of the monitor panel the manufacturer used Crystal Black and known UHD Dimming technology.
- Impact/Opinion
The curvature of the screen is 4200R, which characterizes the piece of a circle with a radius of 4.2 meters. The manufacturer believes that this is the optimal curvature for television displays if to struggle for the ideal presentation angles. Perhaps the biggest advantage of the flexible screen is that it can be tuned with all options of location in the accommodation. Conventional curved screens may be more attractive, but they are comfortable only when viewing directly in front of the center of the screen. But with a flexible version, there is no such problem anymore, because the person can adjust the curvature depending on the place in front of the TV, which can facilitate the restricted presentation angles inherent in Samsung LCD LED TVs.
The developers explain that the owner of the TV can give it a curved shape to the watch of movies or programs, because curved screen helps to get stronger and more vivid viewing experience due to the fact that all points are equidistant from the viewer. Using this screen, the user can equally effectively interact with the interface from both sides, launch applications, and control the player and so on. Transparency of the display the user sets as preferred. However, not each person can have enough money to get these impressions – the value of the TV quite high – USD 34 thousand.
Those who expect to purchase such a model should pay attention to the fact that this “revolutionary” concept could soon become a bit primitive in the world of modern technology. The reason is that LG showed its bendable 18-inch OLED display, which is so flexible that it can be rolled into a tube. This is only a prototype and a perfect illustration of how far a revolution in the world of flexible display technologies can move.
