The initial business and data transactions started with DVD which was distributed by mail and different plans that were used to stream the movies.
The database has been designed in such a way that a customer is required to have an account. A customer is required to have only one account. An account can also be owned by only one customer. The database system also supports only streaming of movies and DVDs and no TV shows. The database relationships have been designed in such a way that a customer can watch many movies which are streaming and also a streaming movie can be watched by many customers. This is a many-to-many relationship. In the same way, a DVD can be rented by many customers. Another rule that the Netflix database has been designed is that a movie can have one director. A director can direct and guide many movies. This relationship should come out clearly while undertaking the design. On the same note, a movie can have one star while the same star can be a star in many other movies. Another business rule is that a co-star exists in more than one movie. A movie only has one co-star. While designing the database, there are the issues of genres where a movie can be listed in more than one genre.in the same way, a genre can contain more than one program. Another business rule is that a customer is allowed to rent zero or more DVDS. A DVD can be rented by more than one customer. There are many plans that exist that entail the way the customers rent their movies. One plan is associated with more than one customer while the customer will have only one plan. There are types of movies. A movie can have only one type but one type can be attributed to many movies.
There are many entities in the design of the database. Some of the entities include Director, Star, Co-Star, Customer, Rentline, DVDCopy, Type, and movie. There are relationships that exist between these entities. The business rules ensure that the transactions of the database work well in the entire database system.
In conclusion, the design of the Netflix database follows the database design rules. The relationships have been followed after careful analysis of the relationships between them. It is important to understand the business transactions that take pace when undertaking movie rentals. All these have been included and integrated in the design of the database.
