When we are talking about the death penalty, what state are we thinking about? Of course it is Texas. Everyone knows that this state is, for sure, the capital of death punishment. It got this name after numerous executions with lethal injection. As for example, we can see that the quantity of such death penalties here since 1976 includes more than five hundred cases (DPIC). First of all, this number shows us that Texas was actually a leader state for such executions. Secondly, it has the historical grounding. The first such action was taken here – on December 7, 1982 Charles Brookes was sentenced with lethal injection (DPIC). Right after that Texas started to use death penalty as a punishment on a legal basis.
The company of retaining death penalty definitely causes questions. As for me, we are living in well-developed democratic country. This is the first actual point why we need to cancel the death penalty. All around the world democracies have already rescinded from such type of execution. Moreover, the right to live is one of the main quotes of international organizations, such as UN and its commissions, Council of Europe and others.
Should Texas or US continue doing that? From my point of view – no! Firstly, it is not our right to take somebody’s life. The other point is that everyone can have a second chance, even if the person was imprisoned for theft, fraud activity or murder. Each person should have a possibility for rehabilitation. All around the world we have people that were in prison previously, but now they are good workers, nice parents, friendly neighbors or friends. Furthermore, we can judge for the past, but there is no possibility to judge for the future. That is why the ability to have future should be given to each and every person, even the one that needs to be punished with death penalty. That is why we need to finish such practice and begin a new chapter of US’ life.
