1. The three major issues that are going to be affected by the decision includes; shareholder welfare, social and environmental responsibility, and ethics. The three aforementioned reasons are directly affected by Du Pont’s decisions; thus, it is essential to take them into consideration. As the chief executive, it is important to identify the areas that are impacting the three areas and identify if these issues are critical for the profitability of the firm. The observed changes may be a result of normal environmental cycle rather than an abnormal change. The chief executive may have to prioritize issues and give more importance to those issues that have an immediate effect. However, the depletion of the ozone layer is a growing phenomenon, and it is gathering widespread attention. If Du Pont wants to have a positive image in the market, they may have to consider environment-friendly decisions.
2. A major source of uncertainty is research and development. As it is costly to develop a new product or conduct research without any fruitful result; therefore, the organization must have sufficient funds to support these decisions. The results of research are going to become evident in the future; thus, forecasting may increase uncertainty in the organization.
3. The position of Du Pont has changed over the years, and the company has been successful in adapting to external changes. The evolvement of the company is evident from the fact that chlorofluorocarbons were not given importance, and people were largely unaware of this issue. It was during the 1970’s, and 1980’s that a realization hit people that there was a problem. Consequently, consumer buying habits have changed, and companies like Du Pont have been forced to change their business practices. It becomes common practice for many organizations to adopt environmentally friendly practices as a marketing tactic.
