The continental congress believed that the Declaration of independence would enable them to pursue reconciliation with the Great Britain because the colonies were preparing for war. The continental congress created a continental army after their efforts in reconciliation failed (Armitage 16).
According to Jefferson the colonists revolted because of simple facts such as the denial of their rights as English men (Armitage 22).
Jefferson did not rely on man-made laws or parliamentary laws so as to justify American action so as to unite the thirteen colonies. To achieve this, he stated that abuse of basic rights and violation of laws existed under the British rule (Armitage 25).
Jefferson lists a number of causes behind the American action so as to incite the desire among the colonist of America on self rule (Armitage 29).
America faced two choices due to the British ignored a peaceful reconciliation the first choice was to declare independence from Great Britain. The second choice was to raise a continental army (Armitage 33).
Legitimate goals of good governance according to Jefferson includes rewarding of peoples labor, securing of their rights, promotes their joy and committing itself to their will (Armitage 38).
The government should have the maximum power over people so as to empower their rule for good governance according to Jefferson (Armitage 43).
The abuse of power by the government may lead riot and instability in the government because the citizens will refuse to be governed, they might even plan to overthrow the government. This abuse includes the mismanagement of public funds and the lack of following its own rules (Armitage 50).
The declaration of independence document is like a sign or covenant which bind all the states together. The Americans believes that their fore father worked hard for their independence and every citizen lives by what is written in it (Armitage 52).
