Describe the conquest of Alexander the great and analyze the legacy of his empire.
Alexander, the mighty leader of the Greek empire, first secured the Balkan Peninsula and then went on to cross the Hellespont. He then faced the Persian forces and took Miletus and Halicarnassus as he went ahead. Giving the leadership to a united Greece, he then entered North Syria where he fought the battle of Issus to defeat Darius III.
Having dreamt of the conquest of the entire Persian Empire, he reduced Gaza and Tyre and took full authority of Syria in 332. Then he entered Egypt only to be acknowledged by the son of Amon-Ra. After this, the great warrior founded Alexandria and after returning to Syria, he fought the battle of Guagamela with Darius again. Overcoming the hardships of the war, he won and went on to plunder Susa and Persepolis in Babylon.
Alexander captured and killed Bessus, the new king of Persia. He was now beyond the regions of the Oxus River. As there was a conspiracy against Alexander in 330, he went on to execute Parmenion’s son, the guilty and even Parmenion himself, a general in my army.
He then went on to conquer Sogdiana and Bactria only to advance to Northern India. He was received warmly by some of the rulers of the region. However, he faced intrepid opposition from Porus of Hydaspes whom he successfully defeated.
Alexander went down till the Indus delta with his fleet and then directed Nearchus to go to the head of Persian Gulf with the fleet. Then, he himself went ahead with the men through the desert of modern Baluchistan, South Iran and South Afghanistan. His march finally culminated at Susa in the year 324 B.C.
Alexander became immortal in the pages of history owing to his great conquest which was never surpassed by anyone else. He hardly had time to form governments at the conquered lands. Under his influence Hellenism spread across the Middle East and Asia. His legends adorn the history of the world and his feats on Bucephalus, his horse, are very famous. The story of the cutting of the Gordian knot is also well-known. It is beyond doubt that he is one of the greatest generals in the history of the world and a very powerful personality too.
