Depression is a mood disorder that affects nearly all ages of people. This mood disorder is said to be the deadliest considering the massive and aversive effects it has on those that are suffering from the illness. Unlike having a gloomy or sad day and getting over it immediately or soon afterwards, depression basically has one down in the dumps on a daily basis with absolutely no hope of anything good to look forward to in future to the extent of getting suicidal.
In as much as depression is not a part of a normal aging process, it defiantly occurs and the worst part is that it is sometimes accompanied by other clinical illnesses especially in the later years of one’s life. Research has shown that almost a quarter of 600,000 people who’ve experienced a stroke are likely to suffer clinical depression. Older people who’ve suffered from such are likely to be left undiagnosed because the symptoms are overlooked a lot with such comorbidities this is one of the major concerns which essentially calls for awareness and better understanding. Symptoms of clinical depression have often gone unnoticed especially when they occur simultaneously with other life events that accompany old age. These include loss of loved ones and terminal illnesses and even loneliness from losing friends or maybe marital issues.
In most cases, depression in old age has been linked to increased suicide among the elderly making this a very crucial topic to focus on. In most cases, individuals in their senior years of life, find it very difficult to talk about the different problems they are experiencing because they do not want to feel dependent on other people. Difficulty in opening up makes some, live their lives struggling with depression, which leads to more harm. This research will use scholarly sources such as peer-reviewed journals, scholarly websites, and books to make a detailed analysis of the effects of depression on the elderly. With the help of past scholarly researches done on this topic, the research will shed some light on how to tackle this issue and the different ways that can be used to help the elderly acknowledge and understand that they can also develop depression.
