There were two major objectives of Descartes in his mediation research; these objectives include provision of a foundation for scientific methods, and to prove an association of religion and science. Descartes wanted to provide a proof that the scientific knowledge source was deeply linked with the mind and not with sense. In the dream argument Descartes considered two different aspects. Firstly, he explained that if someone pinched him while he was dreaming, he will wake up. Secondly, if he thought that he was dreaming, and someone punched him in a dream then he would be capable of saying he was dreaming or not. Descartes would, however, conclude the information as he mentioned that he would never get the reality if individuals are conducting the test in reality or if the test is performed in dreams.
Socrates considered arguing with everything from the starting point. This is also true in case when there is nothing remaining to further argue. However, throughout his meditations, Socrates mentioned that there are no concluding remarks on the basis of which waking life can be differentiated from sleep, and understanding or bewilderment is the only thing that can play its role in convincing an individual that he is sleeping. From this statement, it is evident that Descartes is of the view that the source of pain is something else instead of an inch. Though Descartes became confused and doubtful, yet he emphasized that an individual could not dream, so he did not know whether the test is performed in the dream or while an individual was awake.
I cannot say that I am agreeing with the conclusion and reasoning of Descartes. This is because, I consider that majority of individuals dream while they are sleeping, and they are aware of the time when they are actually awake. There are some individuals who can pinch their selves, but they do not realize that they have strong or powerful pinch. Pain is associated with touch’s sensory perception. If an individual is capable of having a tactile and pleasurable perception in a dream, then it is also possible for an individual to get experience of un-pleasurable experience in a dream. Further, I also believe that there is no logical order linked with dreams, when an individual is in dreaming state, he/she does not think in a logical manner. Anything can take place in the dream as the dreamer is dreaming and is in a dreaming state of mind.
Waking life, however, follows a sequence in logical manners in which there are rules and regulations, and laws of nature that allow the world to move and act in some ways, which are different from others. Furthermore, I myself do not remember all dreams, but I remember some dreams, and I try to associate good meanings with dreams. The need is that we have to accept the reality that all individuals are different, and a thing can be right for one individual, and at the same time it can be wrong for another individual. Some people may perceive things as right, while others may perceive them wrong. It is also possible that sometimes the mind comprises of illusions or it may deviate, but when an individual have hands on something in reality, then debating the impossible should be avoided. The majority of people would be in fact encourages and motivated by a drive of Descartes to find the truth, and some people would be of the view that there is no need to argue upon all the topics.
