Summary of the presentation
Deutsche Bahn (DB) hold leading positions in the European Union, as it has developed in all segments of the transport market, including passenger transport (long-distance regional and urban passenger transport in Germany and EU in general), transportation and logistics (represented by European rail freight transport and global logistics services), and, finally, infrastructure (rail network, traffic stations, etc.). Basically, the company ranks first in almost all segments at the regional and international levels.
The revenues, EBIT and Employees rates in 2015 are incredibly high with 40.468 million Euros, 1.759 million Euros, and 297.202 employees accordingly.
DB-Groups structure drives the continuous development of the German railway into the comprehensive system, as it is integrated and internationally oriented. Speaking about the structure, it should be said that all business units are directly managed by DB Management Board represented by Chairman and CEO and his subordinates: 1) Infrastructure, Services, and Technology (DB Netze Track, DB Netze Station, DB Netze Energy, DB Services); 2) Traffic and Transport (DB Cargo, DB Long Distances, DB Regional); 3) Finance\Controlling (DB Shenker, DB Arriva); 4) Human Resources, and 5) Economic, Legal and Regulatory Affairs.
Thus, even though the DB structure allows the company to be internationally-oriented, the main focus is still in Germany, as in 2015 internationally revenues comprised only 26% of total revenues amount. 190.000 employees out of total 300.000 are based in Germany, which 63% while 28% of all employees are based in other European countries, 5% in North America, 5% in Asia and 1% in remaining international locations.
Strategy of the Group
DB is following the latest developments and trends, such as changes in global economy and its influences on economies at regional and local levels, climate change issues, regulatory policy framework in the railway sector, liberalization trends in EU, the active position of citizens and their desire to participate in project shaping process, etc. In this regard, DB has developed DB2020 framework to achieve sustainable success putting together three sustainability dimensions: economic, social and environmental. The DB2020 framework was first announced in 2012, and since then the company has already succeeded in all sustainability dimension areas. As for economic dimension, they conducted long distance campaign and made investments in the fleet and in terms of profit growth, they got franchises for Arriva, launched long-distance passenger and established new Logistics-terminals. As for social dimension, they enhanced their employees and corporate culture, for example. In terms of protection of the environment, the company managed to reduce CO2 emissions and rail noise.
Development since 1994 Railway Reform
If we go back to the history of the company, it started in 1835 with the sox-kilometer Nurenberg-Fuerth railway line and gradually developed into the leading international logistics company. The turning point in the history of the company was the Railway reform that took place in 1994 and gave a start to the new era in the German railway system. The reform allowed implementing the entrepreneurial structures, expanding competition instead of the monopoly, growing profitability instead of losses, and, finally, the responsibility for local rail passenger transport was delegated to local levels. It goes without saying, that the reform led to increased earnings of the company and strengthened sustainability.
