The evolution of management has brought maximum efficiency and goal achievement in our organizations today. Organizational leaders have been made to change their approaches in management to suit the 21st-century customers’ needs. The authority and strong arm tactics used by earlier managers is far much passed by time. In this regard, management scholars thought of the following developments in the history of management.
First, Fredrick Taylor believed that it is management’s task and the provision of support and general incentives to motivate workers to increase productivity. Taylor advanced study established the importance of machines and workers in performing certain tasks. He went further to analyze the time and sequence in which machine and workers performed tasks. He came up with measurable standards for the efficiency and maximum production in the organization. Taylor concluded that there is a need for managers to create standards and acceptable time per man together with the machine hour. This, he called the scientific management approach which opened doors for other management systems and approaches.
Then, Henri Fayol – an engineer and a manager in one of the French organizations – had his thought in relation to the history of management. Fayol argued that management consists of all undertakings within our societies. These activity undertakings could be handled at home, in school and even within the government. With this idea in mind, Fayol proposed that there is a need for, planning, organizing, coordination, commanding and controlling. Fayol further recommended that management should be a subject to be taught in schools, colleges, and even universities to equip the individual with these five administrative functions to management.
In his argument, he opposed the notion that ‘good managers are born not made’ and advocated for the acquisition of the management skills by understanding the basic principles. This was greatly embraced by many managers, and positive change was realized.
Finally, Max Weber – the German sociologist – had a different school of thought to management. Max Weber saw the need of dividing organizations into definite, clear hierarchies. These hierarchies had clear authority and full control. This meant that managers had to follow the hierarchy of authorities and abide by to the set rules and regulations. His approach helped large organization since managers followed and obeyed to the later the set rules. The impact of this today is that managers rarely think outside the box and face it rough when required to adapt to change in management.
