What goals do you have for WR 122? Are there particular skills you hope to acquire or areas of your writing that you wish to improve? (Explain where you feel your writing instruction left off at the end of your previous writing course and where you would like it to pick up in this course. Also provide specific writing goals that you would like to achieve.)
I have always been impressed by the influence the power of word can have on people, their points of view and outlook. In fact, writing may be considered as one of the greatest ways of manipulation – not only can it change somebody’s mind, but it can also show the level of education, social status of a person and his/her intellectual faculties. That is why it is very important to acquire enough writing skills so that they could help a person in his/her future life.
My personal goals for this writing course are as follows. First of all, I would like to learn pre-writing techniques. By pre-writing techniques I mean thinking over my essay, its main aspects and composing an outline that would help me express my thoughts clearly and in the right order. Furthermore, it is of vital importance for me to single out a thesis statement so that the reader would be directed to the right track. Additionally, the structure of an essay also matters a lot as it defines the type of paper you are writing, the coherence of the sentences and flow of thoughts. What is more, I lack for eloquence and very often it is difficult for me to pick the right word or word combination which would be appropriate for certain type of writing. Choosing the correct writing style and techniques that it presupposes is my weak point as well when it comes to a specific paper. In order to avoid any stylistic mistakes, I need to learn more writing guidelines and use them in practice.
All in all, I am strongly convinced that this writing course will be very helpful for me as I would be able to acquire those skills and techniques which are sufficient for good and effective writing so that it attains a desirable audience.
