Ann Frank draws a difference in perspective between the mind of a young girl, Ann and that of an adult, Mr. van Daan. The differences in which they look at the situations around them and their efforts to overcome them are the central theme of the novel. We are taken through the journey of Ann as she grows into a woman and her relationship with Mr. Daan. Compared to other adults in the novel, Ann seems to like Mr. Daan and aspires to posses his qualities (Frank 77). Ann as a young girl is faced with constant fears and that she is afraid of confronting them. However, Mr. Daan is courageous enough to confront his fears. Ann has two personalities of her public and private life, which are a concern to her, yet she finds no better way of dealing with them unlike Mr. Vaan who is stable in his personality (Frank 142). However, as she grows up, she comes to an understanding that, just like Mr. Vaan, she can learn to analyse issues and situations around her and confront them. Having such knowledge makes it easier for her to share and even deal with more complex issues.
The most significant stage of Anne’s life was the ability to look at life at a different perspective through the life of Mr. Vaan. She learnt that the isolation and double personality that she was experiencing was synonymous with people of her age. This realization gave her the confidence to share her deep most feelings and drew a lot of inspiration from Mr. Vaan. Contrary to when she was younger and felt as if she was in a world of her own, Ann grows up into a more reflective woman. She is more knowledgeable of the situations around her as she learns to think before she acts. She reasons out with her environment as she puts her thought in writing in her efforts to find solutions (Frank 282). The war environment transforms her attitude and thought towards life, as she opens up to her inner being. She realises that she does not need to hide her personality but rather express her thoughts. Analysing the qualities she acquired, we can all draw them from Mr. Vaan who appears to be her biggest role model.
