The dairy industry has a special place in the agricultural sector with milk being produced everyday and provides a regular income to various dairy farmers across the world. Milk can be used to make various high-quality products, and its processing is highly labor intensive and provides many employment opportunities.
The first job available in the industry is farm hand and assistant farm hand. Their duties involve milk harvesting, animal husbandry, feed management and delivery. This is an important position in the industry because these employees are the ones who are always in close contact with the cows. They feed the cows, start and operate the dairies. They take care of newborn calves, identify and treat common animal health problems.
The farm supervisor is also another important employment position. They oversee all operation of a dairy farm to ensure efficient running. Some of the tasks assigned to the farm supervisor’s include determination of paddock rotation to facilitate optimum pasture utilization and overseeing maintenance of all farm equipment and infrastructure.
There is also the production manager position who is concerned with the efficiency in the overall production process. The critical tasks performed by the production manager are the administration of the dairy farm, selection of cows for artificial insemination, identification and correction of problems in machine function and operations, and determination of sufficient fertilizer addition to fit soil fertility and production data (Brightling and Baum).
The final position is the business manager who is mostly concerned with the financials of a dairy company. The business manager sets financial indicators, manages accounts, farm budgets and tax requirements. Other tasks performed by the manager include supervising recruitment, induction, training, and remuneration of new employees. The business manager is also in charge organizing staff meetings.
