Different Worlds I Live In Essay

Some people think that we all live in one world that is called Planet Earth. However, I strongly disagree with this point of view. I believe, that people all over our planet can exist in several worlds at once or switch worlds they live in from time to time. For instance, one can single out the real and imaginary worlds, men’s and women’s worlds, etc. I would like to focus my essay on the worlds I love the most and I can admit that they differ greatly. As I am an immigrant from Turkey, I would like to describe and compare Turkish and American worlds.
Surely, the main difference between two countries lies in religion, being the most important feature that defines how Turks and Americans behave. I consider Americans to be more open-minded and free in everything they do or think. On the other hand, Turks are more conservative and they stick to their religious principles all the time.
Furthermore, people in Turkey live mostly in countryside that makes their mentality to be of more communicative type – they love chatting, discussing different problems or events in large groups, while Americans live mostly in large cities and, thus, this condition has certain pressure on their minds and way of living – they are more independent and self-oriented. Sometimes I can observe fake emotions on the faces of Americans. I must admit that is surprises me a lot, because it is not common in Turkey. However, the USA has opened great opportunities for me to communicate with people of different nationalities and various backgrounds. In my Turkish world I mainly interact with Turkish people and there is no such a diversity of nationalities.
Apparently, my own life differs a lot when I live in Turkey and when I live in the USA. First of all, I am on my own when in the U.S., living with my friends in the apartment, being very independent. On the contrary, I live with my parents in the house when in Turkey, and, thus, some of my decisions and actions are often influenced by them. Secondly, the weather is different in these two worlds – the Turkish climate is mild, with no severe frosts and rains, while it is sometimes very cold and rainy in the USA.
There is such a saying, “You are what you eat”. Fair enough for me, as when I eat take-out food I feel that I am in American world, and when I eat Turkish traditional food and homemade food, I understand that I am in Turkey at that very moment. What is more, I need to adapt to new standards of living when in the USA - I need to take a bus to school (in Turkey I have my own car), I cannot play soccer here as it is not as popular as in Turkey – my only hobby in the U.S. is going to the cinema. Undoubtedly, there is also a language barrier when I am in American world, because no one would understand me if I speak Turkish. Thus, I need to speak English only, which is not my mother tongue.
All in all, I love both worlds I live in. American culture gives me a great opportunity to broaden my mind and way of thinking, while Turkish culture reminds me of who I am.
