- According to classic work by Avsion and Shah (1997), life cycle of the information system includes such stages as getting requirements defined, design of the system, its development, integration and test, installation and acceptance, and ongoing support and development. In other words, this scheme can be considered to include such steps as planning, analysis, design, realization, and use and maintenance (Barry, Conboy, Lang, Wojtkowsky and Wojtkowsky, 2009, 108). Planning is about system`s identification and feasibility, while analysis is aimed at specifying requirements toward the system. At design step solution to the issue is developed. Realization step involves solution being programmed and installed. Use and maintenance mean keeping the system working and creating updates. Another view, presented by A. Cassidy (1998) with respect to information systems strategic development, allows singling out such steps of the life cycle as vendor review, vendor selection, and project approval, its implementation, maintenance and enhancing (8).
- With respect to the scenario below, planning includes general understanding of the challenge and the need to change it. Analysis will be about conducting the study of existing punch cards-related system and identifying key challenges, which should be addressed in terms of developing the new information system (lost cards, inaccurate hours, employees` punching instead of one another). Design step will be aimed at developing computerized entry system, serving as a complex solution to issues, listed below. At realization step new computerized entry system will be programmed, installed and tested. Thereafter employees should receive training, necessary for ensuring quality exploitation of the new system. Use of the system will mean employees` entries being fixed with the help of computerized system. Updates can be introduced to the system with respect to challenges, appearing in terms of its being used.
