- Problem Statement
Sikhs are known as are known as one of the strongest communities in India and are referred as ‘Sardars’, which means chief. The religion has a history of 500 years however the community has shown great development in these years and specially there has been a drastic migration of people from this community to Canada, USA and other parts of the world. It is important to understand that Sikh religion was found in order to fight the Muslim rule in India and the conversion of Hindus to Muslims and therefore the religious beliefs associated with this religion are very strong and community services are a part of the preachings which are usually conducted at ‘gurdwaras’, which are the temples built by Sikhs in the honour of the holy book known as ‘The Guru Granth Sahib’.
- Current Conditions.
Evergreen district of San Jose is known for its tranquillity and provides a great environment to the residents, however due to the initiative taken by Mr Bob Singh Dhillon, there may be a change in the traffic and conditions that currently prevail in that area. To the contrary, the Sikh community has a large population close to and within San Jose, which will be benefited by building a ‘Gurudwara’ (Temple) in that area which would not only be a great sense of attraction for the people however will also contribute to community services and social welfare of the community. Hence, there is a strong dilemma between the thoughts where one side of it attempts to prevent the current natural environment and tranquillity of Evergreen district however on the other hand there are religious beliefs and concerns of a large (minority) community at stake, if the initiative taken by Mr. Dhillon are restricted.
- Concerns of Key Stakeholders.
It would be important to look at the dual concerns and clearly on one side it is about maintaining the current structure and beautiful environment of the Evergreen district by the local people and on the other hand it is the Sikh community that is trying to give shape to their dream of a temple thousands of miles away from their home country.
4.Strategic Goal
The strategic goal of the overall discussion must be targeted towards creating a mediated plan, where the natural resources, environment and simplicity of the Evergreen district can be maintained while ensuring that the religious beliefs and demands of Sikh community are also met without failing to meet the previous objective.
5. Objectives
The primary objective will be to allow construction of a Sikh temple, according to their religious norms and design requirements within the Evergreen district while ensuring that it does not collide with the current traffic and admin norms that are followed within the area, in order to maintain simplicity and tranquillity for the residents.
6. Analysis.
The Sikh community has religious heads that are known as ‘Guru Sahib’, and they can be consulted in order to provide details as per the Sikh Scriptures, that may help to identify the actual design and space requirements for the temple to be built. On the other hand, it is important to analyse the map of the Evergreen district in order to find out the areas that have a direct connectivity with San Jose highway where similar amount of land can be provided to the Sikh community to build a temple.
7. Alternatives
The first alternative as discussed is to provide restrictions related to the design and space to the Sikh community, to be followed while building the temple. Secondly, Once the analysis phase is over, the overall area to be covered by the temple can be given right outside the city, this will not only ensure that the traffic may not be required to enter Evergreen in order to visit the temple however may be helpful to increase tourism for the outskirts of the city and can create a new source of revenue for the people of Evergreen district.
8.Evaluate Alternatives
The first option is not applicable considering the fact that it will hamper the Sikh religious beliefs. The second option on the other hand will help to cover all the requirements of Sikh religion and at the same time will also ensure that the outside traffic does not impact the inner beauty and tranquillity of the Evergreen district.
9.Recommended Action.
Analysis of complete requirements of the Sikhs, in the form of a report after consulting Mr Dhillon and other community members.
Analysis of the current space that may be available outside the city where an equal amount of space as demanded by Mr Dhillon may be provided.
Involvement of authorities to work on the signage and other requirements that may help to guide the visitors through the right way of reaching the temple without entering the main area of the city.
