With enough support any law can be changed. It is said that with great power comes great responsibility, and celebrities do have some level of power over the opinions of the public.
This gives them the ability to champion what they see as justice and sway the views of those people who believe that the opinions of a certain celebrity carry extra weight. It is effective to resist immoral laws when you can gain public support for your viewpoint, and celebrities have a much easier time doing that than the average person. If something truly unjust is taking place then those with the power to facilitate change have the responsibility to facilitate that change.
However, celebrities also have a duty not to abuse the influence they have been given. They need to consider very thoroughly before attempting to use their influence to oppose an injustice. Those people who have given the celebrity popularity and the ability to create change, especially young people, are easily swayed by the opinions of celebrities. Due to the nature of their position it is very important for those in the public eye to be careful when they decide to use their influence to try to create change.
Celebrities should make a point to try to inform rather than persuade the public into trying to right a wrong. In most cases celebrities become popular due to their skills and not due to their knowledge of the justice system or their personal opinions. They need to consider what their role is in the eyes of the public before trying to reach beyond their given skill to attempt to influence the public’s opinion.
