DISCUSSION ON TWO DIFFERENT TOPICS RELATING EACH OTHER
In both the cases Buck V. Bell & the abstract it’s over Debbie we see that attempts are made to relieve the human race. Be it in the case of Carrie Buck being compulsorily sterilized or in case of Debbie intentionally given morphine sulphate so that she dies & is relieved permanently of her extreme condition. Endorsement of negative eugenics decision was hugely seen - the attempt to improve the human race by eliminating defectives from the gene pool. Such stern actions were taken against her without any proper proof of her being mentally retarded. Carrie Buck was sterilized by commonwealth of Virginia on false premises. Buck's child, even under the severe technical standards of the day was not imbecilic. It is often said that Carrie was sent to the asylum because she was an unwed mother or a bad girl. Whereas, the truth was something else, the fact was that, she was raped by a relative and thus she was send to asylum in order to cover up the truth. The impact of eugenics cannot be associated only with sterilization ; coupled with the false intelligence testing of the day, eugenic social thinking led to social disparagement, deportation & even life imprisonment in asylums for a certain set of individuals that may have been falsely branded as morons, imbeciles and idiots. Constitutional tragedies need not be denounced on the day of their decision. Indeed, if one were to theorize tragedy, one would have to recognize that true tragedies are Janus faced, they are tragic precisely because once banal, they become over time not merely wrong but evil.
Secondly, Its over Debbie, a narrative in the Journal of the American Medical Association in which a gynaecology resident apparently performs euthanasia. According to most state laws assisted suicide is illegal. An assisted suicide is a form of murder since the doctor administers a lethal dose of medication to the patients. Therefore, a doctor who has performed this act should receive the jail sentence of a murderer. It is believed by some people that these doctors are not performing anything illegal and that they should continue their practices. This group of people believe in euthanasia, meaning an easy and painless death or a peaceful way of dying. Even though the individual is fully competent, and wishes to end his life because of the pain he faces daily also comes under the act of committing suicide. As an act of cowardice, committing suicide is viewed by its opponents that several individuals perform as they don’t have the capabilities to deal with the problems in their life or in other words they want to run away of problems which is in no way helpful. This type of action should be dealt with immediately. A study shows that one-fifth of all doctors and nurses have actively helped end a patient’s life. This is not a promising statistic for the future of America. One out of every five doctors has helped a person escape his life.
Aside from being illegal, also doctor assisted suicide is immoral. From the following information, it is clearly seen that doctors who commit these crimes have violated many of the rules and values that they agreed to follow when they became a doctor. They have violated all the moral values that they agreed to follow when they became doctors. A doctor’s job is to help a patient at any cost, not help the patient to end their lives like a coward. Hippocratic Oath was violated by the doctors who have suggested their patients to commit the suicides and the doctor has to swear the same before he receives his license to practice the same. I will not give poison to anyone, The Hippocratic Oath states, though asked to do so, nor will I suggest such a plan. This means that doctors are not able to prescribe poison or a lethal dosage of medicine, to anyone, even at the patient’s request. Unfortunately, many doctors do not follow this Oath. Doctors who violate the Oath of Hippocrates should no longer be able to practice medicine. A suspended medical license, was the other violation of Hippocratic Oath. Hence a suspension also includes prescribing the lethal doses of medicine. Though several doctors suggest these lethal medicines for their patients, hoping that higher or government authorities do not find out. Such doctors should not be allowed to practice medicine. Many doctors do not support doctor assisted suicide. In fact, fifty three groups of health professionals have signed an American Medical Association brief supporting suicide bans.
