Introduction
Management systems involve the utilization of designed procedure in stirring a corporation to achieve the set goals. This paper discusses the attributes of a safety manager, identifies their PDCA components and the means to achieve excellence in those skills.
Innovation skills
Innovativeness is the backbone of every successful enterprise, and all safety managers should be innovative. They should have the ability to innovate ideas, set objectives and targets on how to achieve them (Pardy, 2009). The innovations should be in line with the legal structures of the particular country/state. The manager should identify the risks and impacts of a specific plan to ensure the corporation doesn’t face legal actions. Importantly, a safety manager should be prepared for any emergencies in the short-term and long-term.
The PDCA component that applies in innovation is planning. The manager should have specific targets, exhibit responsibility and be authoritative. A safety manager gains innovativeness by persistently trying different ways of doing things. Also, applying technology in planning helps in improving innovation.
I believe in that I have top-notch innovative skills.
Every corporation requires proper documentation for evaluation of performance between different operation cycles. Hence, a safety manager should have excellent documentation skills. He/she should be in a position to keep accurate and updated records of past and present results on safety control methods. Additionally, safety managers should exhibit excellent skills in managing the corporation records.
The PDCA component applicable in documentation skills is Do. The safety manager should not only record the company information but also ensure the details are well-kept (Pardy, 2009). One acquires documentation skills through education.
I have poor documentation skills. Although I know how to record information, I have challenges managing the information. However, some months of learning can sharpen my skills.
Communication skills
After recording information, a safety manager should be in a position to communicate the details to the other stakeholders of the corporation. Communication skills involve fluent speaking and use of correct terminologies in safety management. Also, it requires the use of proper channels such as emails, bulletin boards, and Internet forums (Pardy, 2009). Most important, the safety manager only communicates a topic that they understand well. Thus, he/she should seek more information on the safety issues including background information, current trends and future predictions.
The PDCA component that applies to communication skills is Do. The manager acquires communication skills on-the-job training.
Presentation skills
Safety managers should have the ability to make presentations on the progress of the corporation about quality control and matters of quality control. He/she should have excellent skills to appear as an expert before the stakeholders. Furthermore, the safety manager should understand how to use modern presentation technologies such as PowerPoint.
Presentation skill is the Do component of the PDCA. The manager gains presentation skills through experience.
I have average presentation skills; I’m not an expert in using current technologies.
Auditing skills
The safety manager has the role of assessing and evaluating the performance of measures that they have adopted. Therefore, the manager should exhibit excellent auditing skills. Also, the safety manager should be in a position to perform internal auditing, and evaluate compliance with the adopted measures (Pardy, 2009).
The PDCA component that applies to Auditing skills is Check. The safety manager gains audit skills through education and experience.
I have average auditing skills, so I need to improve my skills through education and practice.
Managerial skills
A safety manager has the role of implementing measures that promote the prosperity of corporation. Hence, they should have excellent administrative skills, measure compliance levels, review quality control process and take preventive actions to avoid future failures (Pardy, 2009).
The PDCA component that applies, in this case, is Act. One gains managerial skills through on-the-job-training.
I have advanced administrative skills and can manage an enterprise successfully.
Conclusion
The attributes of a safety manager include innovation, presentation, communication, documentation, auditing and managerial. Most importantly, the safety manager should employ the PDCA in their corporation.
