- What kinds of systems are described in this case? Identify and describe the business processes each supports. Describe the inputs, and outputs of these systems.
With the application of Pizza Tracker for Domino’s Pizza, three types of systems are used by the company. First, it applies a Transaction Processing System. This is evident because of the company’s because of the system’s they use. For instance, Point-of-Sale system of the company is able to do numerous tasks. First, it has the online ordering system, where online order transactions are made but the process does not end until such time that the pizza is delivered or connected to the Pizza Tracking System of the company. For each order transaction, the inputs ate the customer’s order details which include data on a customer, data on a pizza and delivery data. The system then processes this by either creating a new data in a database or updating the data. The output to be used by the point-of-sales system is the type of pizza, the number of orders and the amount sold from that specific transaction. In addition, the number of pizza and the location information will then be used as an input to the company’s next type of TPS which is the Pizza Tracking System where its output is a report on the status of a specific order.
If the Transaction Processing Systems employed by the company focused on satisfying the customers or the collection of data from the daily transactions of the company, a management tool is also implemented by the system though its Management Information Type (MIS) System. Data from the company’s TPS systems like the delivery time of a pizza can be used by another business support mechanism for the management to check the locations for example where delivery is taking the longest time. It also provides a mechanism to check the branch with the highest sales or with the most number or orders or even the type of pizza which is having the most number of sales. These information are processed and then presented through reports and then later on be used by management. For example, report outputs could be the average time of delivering a pizza, demographic data of the customers, sales trends and report on sales of each type of pizza or report on which ingredients sold the most.
Decision support systems are also used by the company using the data from their TPS systems and other related sources as an input. These are then analyzed to produce reports that are used by management to support and aid them in decision making. Some reports maybe an analysis of the trend of sales and the customer demographics.
- How do these systems help Domino's improve its business performance?
These systems that are applied by Domino’s Pizza has been one of the major reasons why they are still in business today. Because of the Pizza Tracker and the high-end ordering system, for example, the customer services are improved gaining higher customer satisfaction thus, making it one of each competitive advantage from other pizza store.
The Pulse point of sale system has been an important asset of the company as it helped the management with management interventions, thus achieving a more efficient management that later on leads to improving both customer services and more efficient production. Aside from reducing the training time, mistakes are also reduced.
All of these technological interventions made by the company are gearing towards gaining competitive advantage from their competitions with the ultimate goal of increasing its market share. Continuous improvement must be made by the company, like enable their system to go mobile to continuously keep up with the trend. The use of technology in business is always helpful but it needs constant updating or else rather than serving you, you’ll be the one to serve technology.
