Don Juan (DJ) is a gentleman who spends his time seducing several women, flirting and dueling. He takes a challenge and even bets with a fellow young man, Don Luis, on who seduces the most number of ladies. A romantic DJ is portrayed in Zorrilla's play, Don Juan Tenorio, presenting a character who has transformed from a classical to a romantic figure. The play provides a romantic version of DJ, showing love even after life hence as variation of the classical Don Juan. He is a calculating seducer who manages to convince his bet opponent’s fiancée, Dona Ana de Pantoja, and later seduces a young nun, Dona Ines, who is engaged. He still remains romantic even after the death of Dona Ines as they converse with her when she reappears after death as a ghost.
Don Juan successfully kidnaps Dona Ines and succeeds in convincing her into love despite her engagement with Don Luis, DJ’s opponent in seducing women. Both Don Juan and Don Luis have kept records of the number of ladies they have seduced, but DJ wins over his opponent. This show have romantic Don has managed to seduce 72 women as the play ends. DJ writes and sends Ines romantic letters despite the fact that as a nun she is required to retain her chastity. Before he convinces her to escape, Brigida recognizes that Dona Ines is deeply affected by DJ’s love. When Brigida asks her if she really loves Don Juan, Ines is confused and, and thinks that it is better to free despite the love. Dona Ines backs up the reason for being allowed to be free from him, as the only way let her heart go. Dona Ines claims that where Don Juan goes, he takes her heart too. Thereafter, Brigida notices that Dona Ines is falling for him, and therefore changes her mind and encourages her not to resist his advancements. Brigida advises her to accept DJ’ book which contains a romantic letter and that makes Ines to start falling for her afterwards. Out of DJ’s romance, their relationship solidifies into a love a fair that rob Dan Luis a second fiancé and Dan Gonzalo, a daughter. This is possible because Dona Ines finds Don Juan to be so romantic.
Both Dona Ines and Don Juan’s share romantic moments, and Ines seems to enjoy his love so much. Dona Ines considers DJ romantic to be romantic in that, despite knowing his immoral character, she still insists on giving him her love. His father warns her against him, but Don Juan is romantic enough to convince her. Dona Ines passes away after depression, and still after death she loves Don Juan. The love between the two is expressed even after the death. Ines’s spirit talks to him. She desires DJ is repents so as to receive eternal salvation. Don Luis, Dona Ines’ fiancé and Don Ganzalo, her father, engage him in a duel for seducing Ines, but lucky is on DJ’s side. During the fight, Juan pleads with the father to let him marry Ines and even kneels own and begs, but the father cannot listen to him. He is the only one who survives after the fight that leaves Gonzalo dead.
Five years after Dona Ines’ death, DJ pays a visit to the cemetery at Sevilla where his victims have been buried. Here, Dona Ines’ ghost request God for an eternal life, and tries to persuade him to repent from his evil. He gets convinced by Ines’s spirit just as the Comendador was beginning to send him to hell. Thereafter, they are lifted to heaven, with the company of angels as well as celestial objects.
In Johnny Tenorio, the writer to this play has brought up the menace present in the society which is racism and the attention extends to consider the adverse situation in the Chicano in society. However, the playwright is not critical only for Chicanos. It extends to consider the entire criticism in society. The criticism been portrayed on a broad basis. To begin with, when Johnny cries, Don Juan responds to him with harsh words. He goes ahead to tell him that only homosexuals and women are supposed to cry. He also states that he needs to grow up. This depicts that in the society, it is like men are given no right to portray their emotions. Their emotion aspect has to be ignored. However this is not right because according to health professionals, in countries for instance those in Africa, men tend to die earlier than women as a result of keeping any hard times they might be undergoing to themselves. This is the same thing happening in the play. Don Juan wants him to be as tough as he is; he wants him to harden up. Hardening up is however seen as avoiding tears and acting like one has no emotions.
Under the same, Don Juan makes it seem as if women are weaklings in the society. It is like they are expected to cry when they are faced with every single challenge. Further still, it is disrespectful for women when Johnny and Louie keep on analyzing the women they have managed to go to bed with. This is disrespectful and depicts and would be categorized as social criticism which is gender based. Innocent Ana suffers from the same as she has to face the burden alone even after being impregnated by Johnny who knows what he has done but he is unwilling to step up and face his responsibilities.
When Johnny tells his father that he wants to be an astronaut, his father jokes with the issue by saying that he will be the first Chicano astronaut. The first to eat tacos in space. We still witness Johnny avoiding to go to school. The white kids will make fun of him. The teacher will laugh at the color of his eyes and hands. The children will laugh at the meal he takes. In essence therefore, the white kids and the teacher have a perception that they are mightier and that anything that looks different and acts different from them is automatically wrong. This is evident across the board. It has been witnessed in today’s society. Racists are all over although the issue has witnessed people changing that perception. People have minimized the situation in which one is judged on the basis of skin color and origin regardless of the skills one has.
Johnny Tenorio has emerged as the protagonist in the play. However, there seems to be a common link and correspondence between him and his father Don Juan. To begin with, it is essential to note that when Johnny enters the bar and starts making suggestive attempts to Berta, the dad is seated in the same bar only that he has a mask on. The dad does not seem to be astonished or think that this is a new thing to happen because he can relate to the behavior. Almost to the end of the play, when it is most likely that Johnny is up for judgment by the ‘gods’, his dad tells him to seek forgiveness from them. Juan seems to believe through experience that since he had been forgiven for the mistakes he had done himself, his son Johnny can be forgiven as well. Johnny seems to be so rude, disrespectful and unwilling to confess and live up to his wrong doings.
When Juan talks about Johnny’s mother, he brings up the aspect of how Johnny mistreats Ana and other women he has come across. He is against the behavior adopted by his son though he has learnt that all this is completely wrong through the mistakes he personally did in his life. Don Juan is still in attempts to persuade his son to go to school so that he can learn English and progress to achieve his goals. Johnny however is reluctant but his father won’t rest until he ensures that his son goes to school despite the racial abuse. The themes, styles and events mainly surround the life, conduct and character of Johnny. Johnny on the same case seems to live a life that his father conducted while he was of his age. The protagonist issue develops from there as portrayed by the play.
