Master of Ikerre held great importance at the time they were used as they were placed on the entrances to important places or shrines. When I first saw the pictures, I could not help but notice the design made on it. It depicted animal and human forms in which men were holding bows and arrows and the women were either carrying the musical instruments or the clay pots. It determined the culture of that era and helped me a lot in understanding the activities and their way of earning during that era.
In my opinion, it was an interesting thing to do to carve your entire culture on doors every day use items such as doors. It is a perfect representation of them and gave assurance that the guests entering the shrine or any place important would see these doors and understand what the people there did and what mainly their activities were. It was not just a door to their houses or shrines but also a door to the perfect representation of their daily lives and way of living. It is noticeable that the number of male members was larger as compared to the female and many of those men were carrying bows and arrows, which clearly and undeniably reflected that they probably were soldiers for the protection of the empire. Art is the only way through which people can communicate openly. It is an open invitation to read the minds, ideas and thoughts of people. The patterns on the doors were very clear and I could clearly tell what it represented. Architecture and art were mixed together to construct doors, was a brilliant idea that gave a double meaning to the guests that were to enter through those doors. The bows and arrows that can be seen in the art are very clearly carved and every detail can be differentiated from another, which is a proof of the amazing skills of these people at these kinds of artworks. The humans are closely carved with little space in between them and the patterns as well are carved with professional perfection, which is very breathing taking and admirable.
The color of the wood is exceptional and amazing and breath taking in its own way. At first glance I was absolutely certain that this is a piece of wood that is carved and painted but when I looked closely it was astonished to realized that only plain wood is carved very skillfully with artwork and no other alteration is done to the original piece of wood. The horses made are equally lined and perfectly carved and there was no ambiguity of any kind and the amazing part is that I could clearly tell by the very first look that the men were riding on horses. This picture is basically representing the culture that was prevailing in that era and at the bottom of the right door are two animals which are a bit difficult to determine what they are. The two tails can be clearly seen and the ups and downs in the carving make clear patterns but it is difficult to easily tell for what purpose these are made. The artistic details and the carving of these creatures is done beautifully but even though these creatures are perfectly carved and everything and each and every detail of their appearance is clear and flawless but the reason for their presence and the philosophy behind them was not something I was able to grasp. Some of the men in the carving are carrying some sort of carry bags while the others have spades in their hands which reflected that these people might be into some sort of plantation practices. The female members have babies with them and their long hair can be seen carved on them with amazing detail.
The top of the right door also have another animal carved which looks like a flying bird on a wasp. The wings have horizontal and vertical lines that are carved in straight lines without the zig zag in them. The detail carved into the wings of these birds- or wasps is remarkable and yet another example of the skillful craftsmanship of these people. Even though these creatures are beautifully carved their presence and philosophy still slipped by me just like that of the long tailed creatures at the bottom.
