The court cases dealing with cybercrime and anonymity are analyzed and how the legal system failed to curb such threats in the society. The author shows how the reputation of individuals can be ruined by anonymous individuals in the internet. The author explained the impact of fictitious information on individuals. It is shown that a girl committed suicide, when hate speech who was posted on Myspace. This information was posted by an anonymous individual in the name of her boyfriend. The old woman behind this act was not prosecuted leading to loopholes in the legal system.
The article also contains cases where the reputation of individuals was tarnished by malicious acts of anonymous individuals on the internet. The law sided with the anonymous people thereby raising concern on cybercrime since the individuals will facilitate crimes of great magnitude if not controlled. The ethical concerns pertaining to cyber bullying have great impact on the members of the society. The aspects relating to political hate speech are also elaborated in this article. The article elaborates an example where the online speech was manipulated leading to miscommunication and ruining of reputation of the individual.
The legal battle and issues surrounding the internet anonymity became very difficult to manage and handle due to the conflicts of interests. This is because it is very difficult to verify and fully account for the acts of the internet criminals. The authenticity of the information posted on the internet is also difficult to confirm their sources and the circumstances concerned.
In my opinion, the arguments of the author in this article are credible in that the effects of cybercrime and cyberbullying are very harmful to the society fully agree with the author that the anonymous individuals should be prosecuted if they post such harmful information on the internet. The article was credible in criticizing the legal system for siding with cyber criminals who led to cases of suicide as well as demeaning of people by tarnishing their reputation. In my opinion, the individuals who are involved in cybercrime activities should be prosecuted so as to face the law. The legal system should be flexed in order to ensure that cybercrimes are controlled and curbed.
In conclusion, the article illustrates the impact of cybercrime in the society. The anonymous people who post malicious information on the internet should be accountable for the consequences of such information. The legal system should also be flexed in order to accommodate the aspects of cybercrime as well protecting the innocent people from the effects of cybercrime. The cybercrime activities should also be monitored and controlled so as to avoid the spread of hate speeches and messages to the society.
