The modern world is a wonderful place with millions of chances and possibilities for everyone. A person may find good in everything that surrounds them; however, there is also different side of the world that is full of evil. Evil is something morally wrong and wicked that may cause harm or pain. It is difficult to find the only objective root of evil, as it is actually everywhere, waiting for a person at every corner. My best guess would be that the humans with their free will are the sources of the most evil deeds on this planet, as they destroy their own habitat, kill each other and bring pain and suffering to other living creatures. However, blaming humans for everything is just oversimplifying, as there are both good and bad people. What is more, sometimes good people do bad things, and bad people do good things, and it makes finding the source of evil more complicated that it may seem. However, I believe that there is one thing that has definitely brought a lot of evil in the world and continue affecting the life in the societies all around the planet. I think that certainty is one of the biggest sources of evil, as it breeds discrimination and hatred, provokes conflicts and wars and hinders compassion and kindness.
Certainty lies in the majority of unfair and destructive actions humans commit. It is caused by the combination of biological and social factors, as people are taught some values and views by their parents, then by teachers at school, and later at work, while the others are inherited. Humans tend to be afraid of the things they do not understand and the things that seem alien to them. Egocentrism is another cause, as people believe that their views are the right ones, while the others’ are always wrong. Egocentric people think that they are the protagonists of the story, while the others are just secondary characters. They forget that every person is unique creature with the life full of events, thoughts and experiences. These thoughts and character traits spur certainty that causes a lot of evil in the world both consciously and unconsciously. It is a part of human nature to see the world subjectively, but unfortunately, it brings a lot of evil in the modern society.
Certainty causes discrimination and hatred, as people, who believe that they are right often find it difficult to understand those, who are different from them. This kind of certainty has a drastic effect on the society. Throughout the history there are examples of how certainty that created awfully serious social problems and conflicts, some of which still exist today. Racism and segregation are the most common examples. People were used to living their lives the certain way, and they were sure that it was the best way the world should work. Most of people found the ideas of equality alien and even ridiculous. At the same time, people were sure that the slavery was also a normal thing, as it was a normal part of their lives. The same things happen now with the prejudice to women, people with disabilities and minorities. The society is dictating the rules that reflect its certainty that the contemporary way of life is completely right and it promotes discrimination and hatred.
Not only does certainty create social problems, but also it may lead to terrible conflicts that may turn into wars that destroy whole nations. Terrorists are sure that they are they are doing necessary things to reach their aims, as they think that they are fighting for the right purpose. Governments of the conflicting countries think that they are right in sending young men to die defending their interests. Young people die in order to defend their home countries, because they were taught that it is a right thing to do and they are certain that they have to behave that way or another. People breed certainty that their gods are the right gods, and everyone, who does not believe them, should be disrespected or punished. All these things that bring pain and suffering are based on strong certainty, and when a person or the society is sure that what they do is necessary and just, it created proliferating ground for pain, tears and evil.
In everyday life certainty also plays a great role, as it creates conflicts and misunderstanding, because people find it hard to accept somebody’s point of view, belief or imperfection. Certainty does not allow compassionating with the others, as it makes one concentrate on one’s own rightfulness. It is seen in the conflicts between friends, when two people split up, because they are so certain that the other should do the first step. Certainty makes people think they are always right, so they fight and there is no calmness in the relationships: children have conflicts with their parents, people from different cultures avoid communicating, older generations disrespect younger, while younger are not even trying to understand what the elderly are trying to explain. Every person knows how difficult it is to accept one’s own mistake. Everyone makes those mistakes because of the certainty and feels disappointed when everything appears to be different from what one expected.
Certainty is not the only thing that is the source of evil in this world, but it is definitely one of the things that are breeding wrong thoughts and wrong deeds. It has a capacity to make a person believe in something, and this belief has unlimited power. Certainty is a part and cause of many evil things from everyday conflicts to discrimination, abuse and wars, as it is rooted in human nature. However, people should remember that they are not the centers of the universe, and that everyone has a right to make a mistake. If people were more attentive to those who surround them, there would definitely be less evil in the world.
